... I think it's more useful to simply adjust the exposure up & down while looking at the (raw-based) clip indicators over the image.
I think an even better solution is a false color image that maps raw levels to colors, e.g. 1 stop below clipping is red, 3 stops is yellow, 6 stops is blue, etc.
