I leave the MF board for a month - being very happy with my stills cameras and all - come back and the best stuff is here as ever !

How was this done ?

I dont know if it my web bandwidth but it looks like stills

10FPS would be good enough for this (how it runs on my machine)

Or is is red grabs

Mr Cooter - I dont think you have to shoot that much video or spend that long editing - its learning to shoot for the cut IMO - a skill we are learning unless you have a DOP under you - also I think the static camera is not too boring - if you cut fast enough

I wonder if any of you know a piece of software with which I can do the following;
I want to use a couple medium format photos as the base of an internet movie by zooming in and out
and sliding across the frame. I could of course do it in photoshop but it seems very cumbersome
to create 25 crops for each second of motion.

much appreciated

Hi Marc, I think almost any video editing software should be able to do this. You are looking for what is called "Pan & Zoom" feature.
Premier Elements should handle this. If going with consumer version, use sRGB files at input as they don't support color management.
I use Pinnacle Studio v14 and it can do this painlessly, however there are bugs between keyframe layout on timeframe and splitting the video clips. Their support is completely useless.
In any case, you can get the trial versions and play:)

We also need, more than anything, a base standard of viewing. Will it be quicktime, wmv, flash, html 5 and will it stream quickly on 3G, 4G, 5G, at home on cable, or dsl, or will it take fiber optics?

Absolutely. This IS the issue and will be a format war that rages like no other previous. This will be bigger than beta vs VHS and blue ray vs HD by a LANDSLIDE! Also this will take a while to work itself out... Things are not to change so fast as some think me thinks...

The thing is I really wonder if the I-pad will be universally adopted. It's really too big to carry in you pocket, too fragile to carry around in your hand and in reality does less, (not more) than any small laptop.

The iphone was right. The ipad is wrong. Time will tell...

it's getting paid well for it.

Thats always the trick. Isn't it?

Tonight we were shooting on location, took a break next to an Apple store so I went in and saw my first Ipad in person.

Is it a tool?  Not sure.  Is it a novelty . . . definitely and a very pretty novelty at that.

Now it may become a must have item for commercial artists as it does play a portfolio well, allows you to do some web work, certain e-mail etc., but it's not the most intuitive computer I've used, but that's probably because it's a touch interface and though I'm familiar with my iphones and ipod touches, it's a little different.

The deal killer is for viewing anything on the web is it doesn't play flash.  That just seems absurd and regardless of Apple's hold on quicktime, or the future advent of html 5, flash is here today, has better compression for motion files and is more interactive.  There are things that the user could do with flash that you can't do with quicktime.

My web designer quoted some numbers to me . . . and he might be off a few percent but he says that flash plays on 65% of all computers in the world today and quicktime is only on 14%.

That right there greatly limits the use of the Ipad.

Now with all that in mind come April when the 3g version comes out I will buy one.  Do I like it  . . . dunno . . . will I use it . . . yes at least for a quick way to show our work . . . will it become more useful . . . I dunno.

What is interesting, it would have been great tonight to play and view the imagery we just shot on the Ipad screen because the screen really is beautiful, but nobody I asked knew how to transfer images form a cf card to the ipad.

Maybe that's coming next.

Hi,
Flash is not going to die (at least yet) as I heard many times here.

But html 5 move is pretty serious, and we might see all that increase before 2012.

Now, there are issues even without flash. Talking about pure html, the phones ( do not know about the Ipad
) does not recognize frames. So let's try to navigate in this web site that has no flash:
http://www.art-dept.com/artists/borsodi/

You can see that you just can not use it properlly.
This is not acceptable.

If you guys have your web pages in flash, it is time to start to build an html 5 beta version.
Not kidding.

Personally I think the iPad replacing print magazines is about as likely as photography replacing paintings was. I'm sure there will be plenty of digital only magazines but there's just no way there will be a mass exodus by established magazines, especially ones based on high-end photography. Imagine something like V magazine on an iPad, that's just depressing. I also think that hybrid movie/editorial example posted in this thread is pretty campy and gimmicky, no way is that going to be the standard, the use of motion will be much smarter and less costly than that. It's more likely we will see things like motion incorporated in articles when film has been shot already for some other purpose, the use of 3D models for new products so you can check them out from different angles, and especially interactive advertising. I don't expect the regular content to change much beyond that really, it's just too costly.

But there we go. Interactive advertising is going to be a standard, and for that, no flash is requiered.
About V magazine, the pics are displayed at 720pix wich is considered the size for good viewing and copyrights safety.
I don't see so why it would depressing in Ipad 1024x768, if watched horizontal, this web will display like in your computer.
Actually not exactly because the resolution is 132ppi, a little better than the current web so the page will appears smaller, but not because the Ipad is too small.

This iPad Camera Connection Kit might work with card readers, and appearently via the camera, but it's not available yet .

On a related note, for personal work, I'm sometimes using my MSI Wind with OSX installed, works like a charm and is an actual computer - within limits.
Comparing this mini-mac to the iPad, I'm wondering if the iPad exists only for the sake of being different .
