9880 printing problems
« on: January 26, 2010, 08:22:58 pm »

I have an EPSON 9880 and I print large prints: 1 or 2 gig -
I print a first print with relative ease and then the printer does not want to respond/
I have to reload the printer in the print and fax dialog box, restart the computer and so on..... NOT GOOD

I obviously checked all the cables - they are less than 10 feet - USB  ...  I tried Ethernet cables
I flatten the files, tried printing PSD (#3)  and TIFF files
I reloaded photoshop a few times  ( from the original disk)
Repaired the permissions..   well just about anything I could think of.
NO CHANGE

I was told that my POWERMAC  G5 quad had problems rasterizing and was not fast enough.
I got a new MAC PRO QUAD CORE INTEL  -(Lucky me!)
GUESS WHAT

Exact same problems.
Any suggestions on what the problems might be and possible solutions!!!
Thank you

That doesn't tell us much about the size of the print.  What size/resolution?

If these are pano's you may be exceeding the driver's maximum length which according to Epson site

Q:
What is the maximum page length for the printer?
A:
The maximum printable page length is 90.5 inches when using the Epson printer driver. This may vary depending on the application being used and the image resolution. Using a RIP may allow you to exceed this limit as well.

And you don't mention what version of Photoshop. CS3 had issues outputting really large files. That was resolved (as far as I know and at least for me) in Photoshop CS4.

I print 2gb to 3gb files on my 9880 all the time, no problems on Vista64 with CS3 or CS4.

Do you have enough space available on your disc for spooling?  In addition to whatever scratch disc your image is using, you would need several more gb for the temporary files used by the printing spooler.  How much ram do you have?  Do you have other memory hog programs running at the same time?

On PC's you can solve certain obscure and persistent printing hangups caused by driver crashes by resetting the printing spooler at the administrator level.  Maybe there's something like that on Macs.
