645ZD: are the prices falling?
« on: May 20, 2009, 10:10:51 pm »

Does anyone know what Mamiya is planing for the US market for 645ZD?
Just found this deal on ebay from the Taiwan seller I purchased my ZD camera from back in 2006:

Is this to be expected from the US dealers as well?

Mamiya had historically made some damn awful deal with MAC, (Mamiya America Corp)  to distribute Mamiya products in USA at very inflated prices.
These middlemen, oops, 'official importers', managed to mark up everything so much, that people found most products, like Mamiya 7's to be almost half the price in expensive Europe than they were in USA.  People imported privately, eBay worked its thing, and litigation followed - note the wording about USA buyers in that listing.

Hopefully they can get out of it this stupid contract, and make their prices competitive worldwide. there's no room for MAC and its greedy markup, in the survival of a great MF manufacturer.

That's "old stock" - it's an AFD II with the old 80mm lens.  Adorama have the kit, but with the new AFDIII and 80mm D:

I don't think $10,990 is a bargain perse, but I've seen those kits from the US sellers on Ebay (legit stores like Norman Camera) for $9499.

As for the importing mumbo-jumbo; there's alot of debate about it and it's more or less deemed as scare tactic by MAC Group.  If you google it, you'll see that people ordering stuff from Robert White in the UK without any issues.  I bought a used Mamiya ZD dSLR last year from a seller in Germany.  It came through customs without any problems.

Hi Michael
My feeling is since Phase has the controlling interest in Mamiya now is that the ZD will be dropped. They will stream line things. The ZD was designed in 2004 so I think it is time. The ZD camera, who knows maybe Phase will look at this next year? The way the market is these days we will see what will transpire in one more year.
