An idea for a gear test that would be really meaningful...
« on: February 25, 2009, 10:01:10 pm »

Why don't a bunch of us who shoot (and know) the different systems get together somewhere for a group shoot/idea swap. I'm not thinking of anything competitive - more a cooperative, fun event. I remember that Michael's original Megapixel Madness (a bunch of medium format systems, plus the Canons that were the real small-format option at the time) was extremely informative, plus it seemed like fun for the participants. I'd like to see it happen somewhere where there are real landscape subjects to photograph, because I think that real images will be both more fun and more informative than test targets (maybe shoot a couple of targets as well, but concentrate on real, interesting images).
Are there enough folks living close enough to make it work? I'd think the necessary systems to assemble are the D3x, the Alpha 900 and the high-res Canons (at least one, maybe both). It would be fun to have one or two medium format systems there as well, and whatever else people want to bring (anyone got a 4x5???). I'm sure a bunch of experienced photographers will find plenty of strong points to all the systems, as well as weaknesses.

I live in northern New England (Vermont, but would travel wherever in New England - Acadia National Park would provide GREAT subjects, for example), and shoot a D3x.

Nice idea, too far for me now. I spent a couple of days in Acadia last Sep, do you know a short climbing route over the side of a rocky mountain? it's fun and you enjoy nice views on top.

Was that Cadillac Mountain on Mt. Desert Island?

No, this mountain is directly facing the coast, I think it was Champlain mountain. Unlike Cadillac mountain, you can't reach this place by car. There is a funny steep route on the rock wall, but plenty of iron hangers to help you climb. The starting point is a small park place right not far from the beginning of the road loop.

I think this is a fantastic idea, and I'm floating it to a camera review project I'm working for...  (soon to be launched, wooHOO!)

As far as Acadia goes, here are my thoughts on that:

It seems like it's gaining some momentum again, and with this idea, that could be a remarkable bit of synergy.  Email me at [email protected] if you're interested, I also have a FaceBook group on it (if you can STAND the new interface), all are welcome!

that's Cadillac.  spent the night (illegally) there once, on that face...  a total blast.

That Acadia project certainly looks like a lot of fun to me, but I'm not sure if I'd be able to take the time and put the money into it. However, I'm likely to be living and working in that area at that time, so even if I'm not a part of the actual workshop I might drop by and say hi while you're out shooting or something.  I know I'll certainly be doing some photographing there.

the money part of it was just floating a number out there at the time, (a few years ago...)  -unless you just mean the time off and travel expenses...

we're kind of back to the drawing board on it, and maybe can even get some sponsorship, who knows.  I'm puttin you down for "in"...

It's quite nice but steep, be sure you don't have vertigo!

Down there you can see the park place. The recommended way down is through the side face of the hill, longer but much softer takes you to the road not far from the park place.

I'd love to participate in the Acadia Project, and can bring experience with the D3x (which I'll, of course, bring), Canon printers (I can't see how to get my iPF6100 there, but I've been printing with the iPF series for years and am pretty familiar with that beast if an iPF can be found), Macs (my Mac Pro with C1 Pro, CS4, etc... could potentially be loaded in my vehicle) and photo education. This could really show us some real-world comparisons, as well as being a fun way to swap ideas, skills, etc... I'd love to see ALL the manufacturers sponsor this, because it would be a chance to get some side-by-side use of the various systems, each operated by someone who knows what they're doing with it. I wonder if the Maine Photo Workshops (located 2 hours down the coast in Rockport) would be interested in getting involved in some way? They certainly have a lot of workstations located comparatively close by...
Acadia's about the best landscape in the East - to get anything as nice, we'd have to go out west. I'd recommend avoiding the height of the tourist season, though. I shot Sand Beach in February, and got stuff that would have been impossible at any other time of year - not only did the sand form amazing formations because it was frozen together, and the snow add a wonderful element of texture, but I wasn't dodging tourists who would have been everywhere in the high season.

Great thought on the Maine Media Workshops...  I've taught there, I can certainly present it to them.  (don't know why I didn't think of that, duh!)  Right now on the Facebook group I have both Canon and Nikon reps interested, I think a Leaf rep too.  The one political issue is that most sales reps run away from "shootout" situations like they're the plague.  It's really a no-win situation for any of them, if you think about it, but yet, they still seem interested.  We'll see.

The more exciting possibility is the involvement of the camera review site I'm writing for.  I've talked a bit to the editor, he's kind of swamped right now with other issues, but seems interested.  He could pull in all sorts of stuff to play with, and then leverage a lot of good content.  (one of the things we've been talking about is to let users submit their own reviews of equipment, constrained to our format, but their own take on equipment after actual use.)

Actually, high tourist season is unbelievably under control there, and one of the reasons I was considering it.  They get a huge amount of traffic, I think actually second only to Yosemite, in the US, but the last times I've been there were in August, the absolute height of the season, and it's been remarkably tame.  My thinking was mid-fall, before Columbus Day, for one reason- the free buses all over the island.  I brought my camper up, parked it, and didn't have to drive anywhere for a week.  It was awesome, and it's a model of a low-impact mass-transit system, that even the local community applauds.  (It shuts down on Columbus Day, I'm pretty sure.)

Also, it's important that you know it's not just about landscapes on the coast of Maine- there's a whole ton of other subject matter if you're into it.  The Beans of Egypt Maine?  Egypt Maine, and some striking examples of rural poverty are a stones throw away, for the photojournalists,  I have access to a full-on studio for fashion shooters, even equine photography for a friend of mine who shoots horses...  really a remarkably rich array of resources.

It is an incredible place in the dead of winter, though...  I went to U Maine Orono, and we always went out there, all throughout the year (along with Mt Katahdin).  Oh my god, I now am remembering what the rangers shouted at me in the morning through the bullhorns... after my illegal bivouack.  They said, "are you in trouble up there?  if not, you will be when you get down!"  LOL

Thanks for the interest guys!

Ah, well if the $500 or so entry fee is out of the picture, time off and travel are really no problem. As I said, I'll be in the area, so you can definitely count me in. I don't have a full-frame model to add to your comparison, but I suppose you could take a gander at my K20D for a look at "how much can you get for $700." You know, for any interested readers who might not be able to put $2500 into a camera body.  And of course I imagine traipsing around a beautiful landscape while taking photos is the core of the get-together anyway.

Is it OK, do you think, to organize this through Facebook?  If you're willing to join, or already on, the group is here.

If you're interested, but don't want to join the FB, let's discuss how we can coordinate...
