HP Z3200 error code 02.1:10

I just replaced the MK/R printhead on my Z3200, and now I am getting error code 02.1:10. I have read that this could be caused by a faulty printhead, but I cannot access the menu to change the printhead while the printer is showing the error message!

Is there a way to change the printhead without having access to the menu?

You might be able to turn the printer off then  back on and unplug kit when the head assembly leaves the home position.

For what it's worth, I replaced a failed Y/M head on my 3200 last summer.  The new replacement from HP was faulty.  Took me months to have it replaced, but eventually, they relented.

Thanks, Dean work, but the head carriage doesn't move when I turn the printer on. It just goes through the normal startup (about 20 mins) and then comes up with the error message.

Check your manual - you can download it on z3200.com - there is a carriage locking screw on the right side of the printer in back by the printmech board. It takes many turns to unscrew, but eventually it will unlock the carriage. (Don’t screw it back in, ever).

Best advice: unlock the carriage, take all print heads and all carts out. Restart the printer and let it ask for the carts first, then the printheads. This is the best practice - any other way at this point will likely lead down a rabbit hole.

Thanks for the advice, Mark. Could you tell me where on the Z3200.com site I can find the manual? Also, do I need to take the printer apart to access the carriage release screw, or can it be done through the window?

When you turn the printer on there should be a slight carriage move. Power off again (the hard way) when this happens and you should be able to move the carriage into a position where you can open the lid.
 Check if you really inserted the proper printhead CD959A and not an CD9409A (which is for the Z3100).

I think it should come out enough to stop it and access the heads, I thought,  maybe not.

Yea, me and another guy tried to put z3100 red/ black heads into the 3200 already this year and got an error message, ☹️. The 70 is for the 3100 only.

you don't need to-   ( btw you need a torx 10 to unlock)
the printer will pick up his routine and locks by it self once started again. 
It is only for unlocking that you need it.

another method it pull the plug when the carriage is in the middle and therefore also unlocked.

GST, I tried your suggestion, but the carriage does not move at all when I turn on the printer. Maybe I need to replace the carriage PCA?

Start with figure 5-4

Then look at figure 5-6

Keep looking until you see the Print Mech Board - the unlock screw hole goes through the print mech board.

I know it’s a pain, but if you study the manual, you’ll learn to fix your printer.

You’ll need to go to diagram 6-62 to see where you can loosen the carriage.

I’d exhaust all possibilities of getting the carriage to move on its own before doing this.

Try going in to the field tech diagnostics - try a three finger pressed start - the second the carriage moves,
Unplug the printer from the back. That’s what frees it up.

If all else fails, there is the way to free the carriage as discussed above.

EDIT - ADDITION:

If you just remove the right cover (see diagram Figure 5-4: Right Cover) if memory serves me correctly, the printhead carriage is right there in front.
I seem to remember that it can be opened and the printheads removed.

Now if this is the case, I would remove all the printheads, close the carriage cover, replace the right printer cover,
Then, take out all carts.

The printer should attempt to initialize, and the carriage should move. It will ask for cartridges, then printheads.

But, if you suspect a bad printhead, I'd get a new one to replace the offending printhead before trying to run the printer.
