Cambo Announces Phase One X Shutter Products
« on: October 06, 2020, 01:25:08 pm »

Some may wonder why we are posting this as a Cambo announcement when other dealers have posted it as a Phase One announcement. Not that it really matters much. But when the XT Camera was announced, it was an announcement from Phase One. Cambo created customized oem versions of their WRS 1600 and WRS lenspanel lenses, sold them to Phase One so that Phase One could put their X Shutter inside and market a new product. Wunderbar. Now Phase One has oem'd their X Shutter to Cambo, and Cambo themselves have announced new products.

So we view this as a Cambo announcement and state it as such. That's all. Not that it really matters much.

Below is our CI article on this announcement, with some breakdown of the complexity.

https://www.captureintegration.com/cambo-announces-phase-one-x-shutter-products/

What does matter greatly - for those who can afford it - is that there is a significant expansion of available lenses that can be outfitted in X Shutter, and that many of these lenses can now incorporate tilt/swing.

The pricing is what it is. These are outsized products in terms of capability and yes, expense. But what I was truly concerned about if this came to pass was what sort of penalty in the form of a tilt/swing upgrade option this would entail from those who boldly bought into the XT system and the X lenses without tilt/swing. Fortunately, in that specific spectrum, the upgrade price for a tilt/swing fitting is not much more than what anyone updating even a standard WRS lens with a copal shutter would pay. So, at least some temperance exists.

It is a real niche , and an expensive one. You're taking the best possible capture quality with technical cameras that employ a wide range of movements and combining that with the best possible quality lenses for that pursuit, and doing so with a tremendously superior shutter mechanism to anything we've seen in the past, not to mention complete in back control of that entire lens operation, save focusing, with resulting substantially improved user experience. It's a small market at this level, and the prices tremendously reflect that.

There are lists of compatible lenses that have been published by other dealers, but those published lists we have seen are not complete and we have looked into this further. There are a few notable ommissions. Note that the Schneider 60XL (not the N version), and the 120mm ASPH lenses are indeed compatible, and it is noted on the list of lenses from our above link.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the clear summary.

This is of course very good news, but a couple of questions if you don't mind:
- what is the technical reason why re-mounting an existing Rodenstock in X-shutter/Cambo mount (say for a lens currently in Arca mount) cannot reach the same level of functionality as a native XT lens?
- what is the functional gap between a native X mount lens and a re-mounted one? Is it only cable going from X-Shutter to back and the capture of X-Y information?
- is there an option to keep a lens in Arca mount and just have the copal mechanical shutter replaced by the X-Shutter?
- if the answer is yes, what is the value of using an XT body vs an Arca one for instance?

Thank you.

Regards,
Bernard

Hi Bernard -

- what is the technical reason why re-mounting an existing Rodenstock in X-shutter/Cambo mount (say for a lens currently in Arca mount) cannot reach the same level of functionality as a native XT lens?

- what is the functional gap between a native X mount lens and a re-mounted one? Is it only cable going from X-Shutter to back and the capture of X-Y information?

First, note that if for use on an XT body, the functionality that is lacking that we've confirmed so far is that the shift positions will not record into metadata and the shutter button on the camera will not be functional. This is because for the lenses outfitted with cabling connection, there are no contact pins to complete the circuit with the IQ4/XT. And as a result, the functionality should then be identical on an XT body as it would be on a Cambo body.

- is there an option to keep a lens in Arca mount and just have the copal mechanical shutter replaced by the X-Shutter?

- if the answer is yes, what is the value of using an XT body vs an Arca one for instance?

Yes, potentially. Since the lens can be easily removed from the Arca R Bayonet, the lens can certainly be outfitted in an X Shutter as a bare lens, which is referenced in our article. If the intent would be to still retain the Arca-Swiss housing with the X Shutter installed, that is up to Arca-Swiss to formulate a solution to do so. Similarly, if someone wanted to use the X Shutter on their view camera, which could be Arca-Swiss, Linhof, whoever, then is is incumbent upon the camera manufacturer to design and produce a mounting lensboard that can accomodate the X Shutter housing. With the new smaller modified footprint of the X Shutter, this is now more possible than it was previously.

The value of using the XT over an Arca R camera in this case, would really be one of size and weight, at the expense of more expansive shift movement. Alog with the option to add Phase One XT Lenses, which would bring back into play the shutter button and shift position recording. Functionally, whether you took a lens in Arca-Swiss R Bayonet and updated it to X Shutter in XT mount to use on XT or if you upgraded the lens to X Shutter but Arca-Swiss created a compatible R Bayonet board, the functionalty between the lens and the IQ4 digital back would be identical.

Thanks a lot Steve.

I am still not sure about the technical reason why a re-mounted lens has less capabilities than a native one, but I assume therefore it isn't a technical limitation but a business decision.

Cheers,
Bernard

Possibly. Because the re-mounted lenses with cabling would not have the electronic contact pins that interface with the body and the way the  communication is currently set up, no pins breaks the body communication. Could they re-engineer something via the cable that somehow completes a circuit and the digital back communicates those functions to the body, possibly. Will they? Unlikely, IMO. So, kind of a combination reason - technical/business, in my estimation.

Hi Steve,

Thanks.

Perhaps I am still not understanding something here, but what prevents the addition of the electronic contact pins as part of the remounting process?

Cheers,
Bernard

Actually I'm going to amend my previous answer from being a combination of technical/business to just business. Because the lens port has already existed on the original XT lenses anyway, there is really nothing I can see that the introduction of the cabled re-mount/converted solutions does to produce a technical complexity. Or at least nothing they are willing to overcome - at this stage.
