Here's another thing I had wondered about, but hadn't tried out. Wondering if anyone else had and their comments. The quote below is from RedRiverPaper.com in their P600 review:

"Software from Other Lands
We noticed a reference to Epson Print Layout software in the original P600 press release. The software is apparently not yet available from Epson America, but we did find downloads for Win and Mac from Epson Japan. Print Layout is a free standing program as well as an export plugin for Photoshop and Lightroom. It is quite remarkable, with print layout and templates for multiple images on a page. Printer color management is integrated into the main control panel and it even features automatic soft-proofing based on the print profile. That feature extends to the ABW system and will soft-proof your images based on ABW settings. A detailed review of the program is forthcoming."

It would probably be great if you were printing from Photoshop, which is a single image processor with no options for multiple image layout. But with Lightroom, Qimage, and Aperture, it probably is redundant.

After reading your post, I downloaded the software and opened it as a stand-alone app and as a Photoshop plug-in. I don't have a 3880 to actually do some test prints, but it does seem like a handy tool for ganging up photos if you are not using a RIP. I sent it to a few customers to try it out. I'll let you know if I get any feedback.

I have been trying this out for several days and to be honest, I am quite impressed especially as you can see the changes on the fly in the ABW mode. The output print does match what I am seeing on screen which is a bonus.
One quirk I have found though is when I try to create a custom size paper. I have some 8x6 cut sheets and no matter what I tried, I was unable to get the software to accept 8 x 6.
If Epson added the "on the fly" changes to the current Driver, then this would be a leap forward.

2 questions.
Is there a way to get a translated page.
Does anyone know if the tool works with the Epson large format printers?
Thanks

I have only been able to find out this about version 1.1.0:
http://www.epson.eu/ix/en/viewcon/corporatesite/support/index?gatewayto=FileDetails.aspx%3Flng=en-GB%26amp;data=qB0qqXe21jEfo1fdd4I1MZZqlJ1H278a9VcdqqJWCFAU003D%26amp;id=512987
Version 1.2.0 is out, and I can't find any info on it yet.

Couldn't find a translation nor is it on the US site.
I downloaded it from epson.jp, installed it ( installed in English automatically) but haven't had an opportunity to print with it.
From what I see, it's not a Lightroom plug-in, only a Ps Automate option and you need to 'transfer the active image' so it renders the active image and once inside there is no 'cancel' button! ;)
I can see it being very useful for ABW, where you adjust the settings from within the app perhaps less so for colour as any changes to the file in Ps won't be reflected in the Epson Layout frame. The templates for printing multiple files on a single page are limited but you can create your own templates from within
So yes, useful for ABW but for the rest far easier and much more accomplished to print via Lr (and Ps) for a multitude of reasons.
Paul - I tested it on my 3800, which recognised it and the sheet feed options automatically. Suggest downloading and trying it out on the larger roll-feed Epsons, it's an easy de-install if it can't.
Edit:
I downloaded 1.20 from the .jp site posted above . From the spec Tom just provided , it seems it's only good for the smaller printers upto the sc-p800 / 3880 - but the translation linked to above claims ' software for panoramic photo output, and with the roll width can be borderless printing.'
-
If you need the Lightroom Plugin, it is supplied in the program applications folder. Like i say, I cant get custom paper sizes to work but it does print out ok on the 3880 with ABW adjustments

Ian - are you on Windows ? On OS X I don't see/can't find any Lr plug-in.

The plugin comes with the Epson Software but if you need it, here is a fresh link

The eBook is written as a PDF as is compatible with Windows and Mac

Thank you for making me aware of "epson print layout"!
Seems to be a very good software to keep the printer setting simple and effective. I installed it for a 3880 - and to my surprise it recognizes my old R800 and R285.. seems to work fine with these too..
But there is one prblem: the option for "ABW" in the printer driver / menu of the 3880 does not come up in epson print layout.
In "color setting / type" there are only two options
- printer manages color
- use ICC profile
There is a third option for B&W with my R800 and R285 - but not with my 3880.
Uninstalling and re-installing doesn't help.
Anybody knows about this?
-
Don't you want the printer to manage colour when printing ABW... then select Advanced B&W photo from the print mode...

I'm not sure to understand your advice correctly...
Within "epson print layout" I don't see any option like "print mode" or "printer settings" to select ABW.
The software loads all the options for epson printers installed on the computer when it starts.
Then I have only the two options which I described above.
And I think there should be the option ABW as well - but it is missing.
No matter if I choose "printer manages color" or "use ICC" - I can't see any ABW option coming up...
-
I would expect that 'Printer Manages Color' is correct and then in the printer driver, you select ABW
-
As I already said there is no setting of the printer driver in "epson print layout"
The purpose of the tool is to "replace" the driver menu. it acts as a alternative printer menu (probably using the driver in the background).
Nobody out there who actually is using the tool... with ABW option..!?

I have actually used the tool, but only briefly because I enjoy the convenience and consistency of printing directly from Lightroom. (I had margin width issues when using Epson Print Layout). Back at the computer today I started up the program, and you are correct (my apologies), Advanced Black and White should be in the Colour Settings > Type menu (see attached image).
On the epson website you linked to (the same where I originally got the program) only the newest line of "SureColor" printers listed as being compatible, so while it might "work" with the 3880, this might just be an incompatibility issue.
Sorry for the mixup,
Mike

Thank you for clearing this up and posting the screen shot.
The middle option for ABW was missing - but now I got it right:
I had to update the printer driver, not the EPL version!
Really a nice tool to print, particular if you want to print out of any sort of photo software which doesn't have color managed printing.
..and with ABW I get a preview of the B&W tone in the actual photo, not only in a sample picture , quite helpful for me..

Glad to hear you have it resolved... Also good to know it works with older printers. :)

I found what appears to be the latest version of, "Epson Print Layout (Plugin) 1.3.1"
Select "Large Format Printers" here:
