I guess we have the answer to whether the new p800 would replace the 3880, today we learned Epson has discontinued the 3880. Our distributor only has one left in stock.
There are still some in the channel of some larger retailers, if you are thinking of buying one, now is the time.

I expect that if I buy a 3880 now, my 3800 will continue to work forever. :(

woo hoo! ordered this morning from bhphoto :)

That is interesting, but I understand the p800 will not be out until June.

Where, from Epson, is it "officially discontinued"? I googled those words and the only thing that came up was from B&H. Maybe they have discontinued selling it. It would be logical for distributers to stop ordering it.

We tried to order one for a customer through our distributor Wynit, who said they have one left and Epson has told them they are no longer available. The fact that B&H also indicates "discontinued" means they cannot order more so they are limited to what is inventory.
I'm sure Epson has retooled the 3880 line to make the new p800, so no surprise they are discontinued. There are still quite a few to be found through various dealers.
Epson typically doesn't make a real public announcement of stuff like this, they just let it be found out through the channels.

The new P800 looks interesting in the specs. Michael's review of the P600 suggest better blacks especially for matte, so the P800 should be similar.
I'm not sure I would buy a 3880 at this stage.

I asked our local Epson representative here in Sweden and he confirmed that the 3880 is discontinued.

There is one unknown at this point, whether the new p800 will continue the 3800/3880 legacy in regards to the rarity of missing nozzles and need to clean. One can hope so, perhaps even assume so, but until they are shipping and quite a few users have experience them that’s one question that remains unanswered. The 3880 has proven itself in this regard.
But I’m with you, I can’t wait to get a p800 in.

I've owned a lot of Epson printers over the years, big and small. The 3880 has been the best of the bunch. If you can wait to see how the new printer pans out fine. But if you're in the market for a printer like the 3880, I'd go for it. Hopefully the P800 is better, but if there's another set of issues like the clogging seen on the 4900, and I don't know how long it will take for us to discover this, anyone passing up the opportunity for a 3880 will be pretty upset. Got no want bumps for the P800 until I see how much better it prints than the 3880.

Yeah, this. My 3800 has already been working forever.
But if I don't order the 3880 now, my 3800 will die a spectacular death in three months and I won't be able to get a 3880 for love nor money.
Edit: B&H has the 3880 for $879 after rebate. Yowza, that's a decent price. Gah.

I haven't tested the P800, but I've used the P600 since december. I believe that the ink and the printer head is the same in those two printers, so they will probably have the same tendency to clog. And since I started to print I have had two clogs. Both of them took just one nozzle cleaning to clear. And the printer has been sitting idle for weeks sometimes in a room with a very low humidity. So if my experience is valid, we can look forward to a printer with the same good behavior that the 3880 had or even better.

Encouraging news but it isn't the same head. The p600 specs out at 5760x1440 and smallest droplet size is 2 pl. the p800 is 2880x1440 and 3.5 pl.
Some of the missing nozzle issues are not necessarily head related (I think the 4900 problems are related to the capping station), so good results from the p600 is encouraging as it seems the engineering would migrate successful technologies.

In my dry climate the 3880 was the only epson that ever died on me and in 2 1/2 years Then Epson at a trade show treated me like garbage the quote you again when I came back a day later still rings in my head 6 months ago. I hope the P 800 is much better mind you in the same space I ahd a 7600 a 1800 a 2200 and a 2400 . I now own a hp z 3200 and a canon pro 1. Until Epson contacts me like they promised I will never consider them again.

Man, it doesn't get much drier than where I live (single digits), I've had the opposite experience. Maybe you just got a dud?
