Well yes. The perfect is the enemy of the good. Sometimes it is better to just take the experience as "ok, but I am not going to make it great" and move on to another shoot having learned a lesson from the previous shoot.

If I wanted every photo to be perfect, I'd never get anything done.   :(

Shoot street...nothing is perfect and it can still be great!

Who knows, if I shot "street", I too might have had one nth of the Pulitzer breaking news award - one of the photos in the winning portfolio took place down the block from me at one of the flash protests.  ::)  But I have no gonads.

I found it thought provoking. Striving to always do better is a must but there has to come a time when you are "happy" with the image and move on to another. I would hate to be someone who is never satisfied with what they have achieved and be in a permanent state of angst. Getting a balance is tricky?

Political demonstrations is something I have specialised in. Probably over 100 in the last 12 years. In Scotland there is very little trouble at demonstrations and I have witnessed trouble at less than half a dozen. Therefore I feel safe mingling and the presence of the Police means nobody objects to having their picture taken. They are a good way of doing street and I would recommend it to anyone unless violence is expected. :)

This issue comes up in music making (my other main pursuit) all the time. In my experience there is a correlation between gaining technical proficiency and losing in-the-moment spontaneous creativity. But it's in no way an either/or thing. You need a certain degree of technical skill to accomplish anything beyond luck or accident. And not all musicians, or photographers, are interested in spontaneity. Or creativity. My favorite musicians are folks who've mastered the art of selective forgetting. They toss out their bags of tricks & techniques and play with something as close to beginner's mind as they can muster. I'll bet many of my favorite photographers have worked similarly.

Am I obsessed or a perfeccionist when I expect straight horizons of the sea ?

Am I obsessed or a perfeccionist when I expect straight horizons of the sea ?

A pet peeve for me as well....and it starts with me: I'm generally unable to take a handheld straight picture. ::)

If you've ever been on a boat or ship in rough seas, the apparent "horizon" seldom appears horizontal (unless you are sitting in some fancy gyro-stabilized seat).

I also have problems getting my horizons level in camera. Even on land!  ;)

I am manialy talkin at thousand of images taken from the beach and always with tilted horizons of the sea level be ot to the left of the right.

Also looking at thousands of shots of streets and buildings and the verticals are bend ...

So ¿ Am I obsessed about verticals and horizontals and is that a disease ¿?

I am not talking about the famous Dutch or German angle to get dynamic into an image but more and more people say ..

Oh that is Durch or German Angle ... being not more then 1 2 or 3 degrees tilted

AHA ...

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Just put the horizon parallel to your viewfinder or the vertical paralell to your viewfinder ... Just as easy as that :-) and press the button and keep your finger for one additional second on it ...

Isn't this why we now have "auto-straighten" in editing apps? Thank goodness! How many of you remember taking apart 35mm trannies to straighten the horizon!

I even remember "cropping" trannies at various angles with black tape.   ;)

Don't know what type of 'trannies' you are talking about.

Is this what your talking about?

This is a prime example of what I said. Street / doc photo has lots of imperfections and many of them add to the photo.

"Tranny"= abbreviation for "transparency"

Like tranny with a trannie?

It is almost literally impossible that Daniel didn't know what was meant by "trannie". He's been shooting for decades, he has without question run across the term "transparency" to mean slide film, and there's an excellent chance he's used it himself.

His "misunderstanding" was just an excuse to dump out all his links again.

And in Southampton, home of the Ford Transit Van, a Tranny is also a vehicle...... (actually the factory closed down last year).

Depends on what you mean by "perfection." To me, 'Perfection" refers to the selection and composition of an image. Sharpness, perfectly erect verticals, very fine resolution are things that are important only with reference to the quality of seeing that went into the picture.
