Title: Some new tools I've found for Macro photography
Post by: Ellis Vener on April 13, 2015, 08:56:25 pm
I've ordered this flash http://www.venuslens.net/product/macro-twin-flash-kx-800/  which I like the idea a of over  over the slightly similar Adaptalux LED macro light because it's flash ( brighter and better motion stopping) and not a constant light source.

But I see they also make variable length extension tubes for Canon EF and Nikon G mount lenses and bodies.
Canon: http://www.venuslens.net/product/x-pro-vari-length-af-extension-tube-canon/
Nikon: http://www.venuslens.net/product/xpro-macro-tube/

I have no connection to the company or whoever is doing marketing for them but thought these products look promising enough to investigate

What I'd really like is not an entirely  new flash that is dedicated to fiberoptic cables, but a  device with fiber optic tentacles  that works with  existing smart flashes (Canon 580 EX II . 600EX Rt, Nikon SB900/910, Phottix Mitros, etc.)

Kinda cool.  As to the extension tube, with that much extension and considering a certain amount of extension give higher magnification for shorter focal length lenses, I would have liked to seen a tripod mount, especially for $169.

I see this as a good deal. A set of 3 fixed length tubes from Nikon is over $270, a similar set of 3 fixed length tubes from Kenco is $129, and a "Savage" variable length tube is $198, all from B&H. None of them have tripod mounts. A flat Arca style plate alone is over $50 from Kirk or RRS, so considering the complexity I'm surprised it's so cheap!

My new tool is only new to me. I bagged the circular reflector/diffuser and got one of those tri-grip kits - much easier to position in the field, where I am propping reflector/diffuser up with sticks or holding with left hand and operating remote release in right hand.

I'd be very interested in your evaluation.  Particularly the camera ETTL interface and convenience of ratioing the two heads.  Also, are the flex arms easy to adjust and do they hold position.

I have a bit of concern hanging it with the extended lights on a hot shoe, but an off camera cord to a flash bracket is not a big deal.

I don't do a tremendous amount of closeup or macro work and when I do it is usually with the Nikon 5T and 6T diopters on the 70-200mm f/2.8.  I really enjoy having both the zoom (variability) and the rotating tripod mount.  I own the Kenko tubes and an old PN-11.  I just think if you are going to have a 50mm tube, then a rotating tripod mound should come with it.
