Title: Blind River Thru the Cypress Knees
Post by: dumainew on April 11, 2015, 09:19:55 am
It's spring in the swamp. And these slow flowing rivers (bayous) carry a veil of duckweed in their current.
Comments and critiques most welcome.

Very mysterious-looking. I'd like to see just a little more of the river. I realize the effect you wanted was the idea of looking through the "knees" to the river, but they are bit like bars in a zoo enclosure - I don't feel part of the scene.

Terry,
Thanks for your comment.
I think I see just what you mean. And I'm not sure how to change that because I'm in a kayak and can't stand up. It's a limited vantage point to be holding the camera only 1 1/2 feet above the water. But know, I'm open to any and all suggestions you might have because it's very much my intention to have the viewer feel a  part of the scene.
Thanks again.
Richard

There are some things that just "translate" well from a kayak. I'm a canoeist and find the same thing. When photographing from a canoe, I try to make use of the foreground when it complements the background. Most of the time though, being a landscape photographer, I forego the views from the canoe and look for higher ground and work on wildlife from the canoe.

I like this composition, Richard. It conveys the density and mystery of a swamp.

Thank you both for your comments.

Terry: I do occasionally get out of the kayak, but it's a dicey affair. The mud'll suck you down to your knees. The next time I try this foto, I'll look for a more open foreground, maybe with a convenient tree branch to lift myself on to.

Scott: Glad you like it.

I think the light situation was difficult: hard that direct son "total light or total shadow".
You IMHO managed very well the situation, and the shadows are ever readable. Not amazing (again the light, not your fault) the colours,
and I like the composition, with its distribution of volumes.
all the best,
