Title: Nikon D700 to D610
Post by: Cornfield on March 05, 2015, 12:28:04 pm
I have used my D700 for four years and love the clean files produced at a range of ISO settings.  I shoot a lot of horse racing which in winter often means very low light and still need 1/1500th to stop action.  The D700 has performed really well at ISO 6400.  Recently I purchased a D610 as I thought it was time to get more pixels.  The D610 is a really nice camera and in good lighting conditions performs really well but not for fast action in low light, high ISO.

Is there any site here I can compare ISO performance of a range of current cameras?  I would prefer to stick with Nikon and have a side-by-side comparison of a D610, D750 and D810 at a range of ISO settings.

Alternatively, can anyone here comment on high ISO performance from personal experience with Nikon cameras?

Try DXOMark comparison (http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Nikon-D750-versus-Nikon-D610-versus-Nikon-D700___975_915_441)

The D700 was very good for it's time thanks in part to the large pixel size, but the D810, D750 and D610 all beat it for high ISO performance.

I shoot a D810 and D7100 and the D810 probably has 1.5-2 stops better ISO performance than the D7100.  I can use ISO 6400 without too much degradation.  Noticible, but not hateful.  I rarely shoot the D7100 over about ISO 1600.

Image below was D810 at something like ISO 4500 inside a reasonably well lit gymnasium with just some basic exposure/contrast changes of the original JPG file in ACR.

Imaging resource has a website that posts images at varying ISO values for different camera bodies.

More pixel is not that very important at the end. Keep your D700. Keep the D610 just the time to send your D700 to Nikon for a pimp. Maybe change the shutter, rubbers and ask for a good general cleaning. It's a camera who do not disappoint and will not disappoint you any time soon. Then you sell your D610 and take some one good lens ;)

It is not just the amount of "noise", but the quality of that noise that matters.

When the D800 first appeared I was worried that it might not give the same excellent high-ISO performance that I enjoyed with my D3s.

At 12,800 and above that was a factor. The D800 did fall behing the D3s. But up to, and including, 6400 the D800 was no noisier than the D3s. Very noticeably, however, the D800 had a much better "quality" of noise - more like old-fashioned film grain that the multi-coloured artefacts of most digital sensors. The D810 is even better than the D800 in that regard, although I would not routinely use it much above 6400 for exhibition shots (unless getting the picture was more important than the image quality).

I own and use both D700 and the D800.  IMO, the image quailty of the D600/D610 is better than the D700.

However, even with my D800, I find I use my D700 more often than not.   Why?  Build quality.   The D700 is built like a tank, rock solid dependable, and it gets the job done.  Also, there are enviroments I do not want to take my D800 into.  Rain storms, abandoned buildings, photographing a police stand off once, photogrpahing a fire another time, and even once, downtown Detroit.   (Seriously - you wanna take your brand new, pretty looking D610 or D800 there, be my guest.  :)    ).

Use the D610 I think you will enjoy it, and there are times you will want and need it,  but never get rid of that D700, you will find too many uses for it.  When mine wears out, it will go back for a refurb/refit at Nikon service.

good luck

I find this baffling.  I am very diligent with the care of my equipment, but my D810 goes out in the rain...usually with the 70-200mm f/2.8 attached.  It sports a camera condom when really raining.  One of the reasons I bought the D810 is because it is weather sealed.  Other than the D3x and D4, it is the most durable Nikon camera made right now.  Image below is from the Nikon USA D810 product tour showing the camera in the rain!
