Folks, I found out today that one of the talented contributors to this forum passed away yesterday. I found out through Facebook and don't have any specifics. Simon and I developed a friendship over the years based on our shared appreciation of studio work and occasionally we'd talk to each other over the phone about the trials and tribulations of the automotive business. He was an incredibly talented photographer with an unmatched passion for detail. I know he felt this forum was a wonderful opportunity to learn and share, I'll certainly miss seeing what's he's been working on. Jim

Sad to hear, he was a good guy and I guess we are many who will miss him!
Best regards
Erik

Another sad news and loss of a great member ("allegretto" passed away last month). My condolences to Simon's friends and family.
-
an excellent photographer, rip.
-
That is very sad news.
I have always admired his work and his willingness to share it with us on LuLa.
I'm sure many of us non-pros will miss him.
-
Wow, what terrible news. Jim, thank you for letting everyone know. It's never an easy task, being the bearer of such bad news.
-
Seriously shocking... just had a conversation with him a a couple of weeks ago. Very sad news indeed. :-[
-
RIP Simon, you will be missed!!!

Simon could shoot, stayed modern though continued producing a very high level of professional work, which is very difficult in today's atmosphere.
He was unique and worked at a very high level.
As everyone my condolences to his family and close friends.
I will miss him.

This is truly tragic news, I'm so sorry to hear this and my deep heart felt Condolences go out to his friends, colleagues and family.
I've confirmed Simon's sudden and tragic passing here in NZ with a reliable source and it is a shock to his work associates. It grieves me to hear the sad news.

Just can't believe it. We exchange so much information over time and he was such avid photographer.
So sad.

Sad news.
Simon was very helpful to me directly in comparing the 810/800e and some lens issues and sent through a lot of messages on the subject as well as his posts.
It's great to get advice directly from such a talented and long standing photographer..
RIP mate.

Very sad news indeed. Another loss for the photo industry
My condolences to his family and friends.

Simon worked freelance out of my studio in Auckland some 30 years ago. Sadly it appears he took his own life. Initial indications are that he was another victim of the changing face of commercial photography globally. The continuous struggle to balance creativity, productivity and meet our creditors. Hopefully he has gone to where the sun is always shinning and no longer needs to confront his demons.
Rest in Peace.
-
If that is true it makes this news even harder to digest. Like others I only knew him through this forum, but for me he always represented success, he seemed to have plenty of high-end work which he always completed to a fantastic standard. In fact sometimes when times were tough for me, looking at his work on LL and his website would both inspire me and make me feel like giving up. I guess we can never know what is going on in other's heads. What a terrible shame.

This is so sad and I was chocked when I read this yesterday. And still am when I woke up this morning.
He seemed like a succesful photographer and he shared his great pictures
and knowledge on this forum for us to read and enjoy.
So if the reason for suicide is whats indicated, its an even greater shock.
He will be missed and my thoughts goes to his family and friends.
RIP Simon.

This is so sad. Seemed like such a great guy and so very helpful to all who asked.
I sadly also understand how this happens. Being self employed in a squeezed market is not a fun place to be.
RIP

So many important people taking their live these days..
I wonder if close family members ever notice depression signs that could actually save their lives.

I wonder if close family members ever notice depression signs that could actually save their lives.
There are no signs for those who seriously intend to do it.
That's the hard part - particularly for the loved ones he/she leaves behind. It makes the loss that much harder to bear and even more painful. I've lost friends and family, and one was more than just 'a successful and famous' photographer with a wonderful family. No sign, no warning.
My thoughts and condolences to all his family.
-
I appreciated every single one of Simon's posts. Very sad.
-
Quite sad to read of his passing. He was a great photographer and a good spirit. RIP

Simon Harper's funeral is this Wednesday, March 4th 3:30pm at DIL's Chapel, 185 Schnapper Rock Road, Albany, Auckland.
It is an open wake from 3:30pm for those who would like to pay their respects and there will be a private service later on in the day.
Again my heart felt condolences go out to his friends and family.
Haere, haere, haere, atu ra.
-
I pray for the soul of the deceased.
-
Just heartbreaking. He was a real talent and a generous man. What news to wake up to.

Very sad to hear about his passing. Always liked reading his posts and his images were inspiring. Condolences to his family and friends.

I can't believe it. Simon was such a thoughtful, generous person in his dealings here. I always looked forward to seeing his work. I would never have thought his situation was so dire, and I would have hoped that he'd have reached out for help before taking drastic measures. So sad today. Rest In Peace, Simon.

Hi Luke,
I will miss Simon, too. To me he felt like a great guy, sharing his experience. I liked that guy and I will miss him very much. We all will go that way, sooner or later, but some folks leave us far to soon…
Best regards
Erik
