Title: Softproofing in Lightroom 3 VIA mac's Preview Application
Post by: Pete JF on February 12, 2015, 09:51:34 pm
I was reading on a blog somewhere that you could Soft Proof in Lightroom 3 using Mac's Preview App.

I followed the steps and when the image opened in Preview, all the profiles were grayed out in Preview's soft proof feature. Can this be done?

If so, does anyone have a clue as to how to do this? I'm in Mavericks.  Just playing around with this. I'm guessing there's no soft proof feature in LR3?

Thanks.

It'd be helpful to know what exact steps you followed, otherwise everyone is only guessing.

Softproofing was added after LR3 but I forget if it was 4 or 5.

Someone wrote a softproofing plugin (based on LCMS) for not a lot of money ($10/20) and it wasn't bad.

If you're referring to a 3rd party product to assist here, forget it, I could never get it to work.

Serious about soft proofing in LR? Upgrade to the latest version which fully supports it correctly, including proof copies and hooks to the print module.

Howard,

Went and found the blog with the Soft Proof guide I was talking about..

Thanks.  I can honestly say I've never noticed that option in Preview.  :-\

That's an interesting article.  I didn't know this option existed.  Seems a bit cumbersome though, to keep adjusting the image and having to call up the print preview to check.  I wonder what's so wrong using Lightroom's soft proofing and direct adjustments.  Works fine for me.

I think it was noted that the OP was using LR3 which of course did NOT have native softproofing so it's better than sharp stick ;)

Howard, thanks for pointing that out.  I did overlook that fact.  And yes, using preview with LR3 is then far better (cheaper) than printing & correcting a number of times.

Pete - I suggest you update some time soon.  Either now to LR5 or wait for LR6.  A number of things have changed / improved.  Not only soft proofing.  I don't regret the update one bit, though I don't use all the functions.  Michael's & Jeff's tutorials have explained the processing and mentioned various improvements.
