Title: 645 negatives scanning
Post by: galvic on December 29, 2005, 05:06:59 am
Hi, everybody. I am both a amateur, and newcomer to the field of medium format. I have recently bought a mamiya 645 super with 80 mm f 1,9 sekor lens, and have made s few shots using fuji provia 160 film. I had the film developed and scanned by local photo shop, and found the results very unsatisfying. I attached the scanned photo, and You can observe a lot of grain. Since the film is ASA 160, I don't suppose that it should account for it. Could it be that I have to scan the negatives on better scan. Thank You in advance for any reply. Niksa Glavic.

I don't see an attached print to review.

As a general rule, film developing can be carried out by most photo-developers with some degree of competency.

Scanning is an art, the operator matters greatly, as well as the output is dependent on utilizing a very high quality, somewhat expensive scanning equipment.  It would be rare to find such equipment at most processors.

Your camera is capable of superior scans. I would suggest you start with transparencys as it's easy to tell if image density is correct. Correct exposure is the first step to a good scan. Could be a source of the grainess you describe.
