Title: Nikon D810 NEF preview image
Post by: HarperPhotos on December 17, 2014, 01:24:40 am
Hello,

Can some one please help me.

Since I got my new Nikon D810 camera the NEF files do not show a preview image like my Nikon D800E & Nikon D800 did.

Its the same on my Mac Pro at home and my Mac Pro in my studio.

Cheers

Simon

Do you have the latest Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update (5.07 or newer for Mavericks)

Mavericks: http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201071 (http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201071)

Yosemite: http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203088 (http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203088)

Hi,

The update is related to OSX not the adobe applications (The screenshots in your first post are from Finder).

Simon,

Do you see an image (on the cam) if you hit the playback button on your D810 ?
Just going back to basics, but it is possible that the D810 isn't embedding the jpeg in the RAW file - or if it is, it's embedding a 'corrupt' one.

Alternatively, are these files tethered or are they coming off a card ? If they're coming off a card,  have you tried changing both the card and the primary drive slot the cam is writing to.

Simon,

I think you may require this: http://www.nikonimglib.com/nefcodec/

Refer here for details: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Foa8dAtSkc

Rob's right; update your CODEC.

No, that codec is for Windows, and will be no use whatsoever on a Mac.

Simon, what OS version are running?

Hello,

Rob you are right it is only for Windows.

I’m using 10.7.5 on my Mac Pro at home as its very old and at work I am using the lasted 11.? Software on the studio Mac Pro.

Manoli, yes the images do come up on the 810 screen. The NEF files from been tethered or from my Lexar and Sandisk CF cards are all doing the same thing which is not showing the preview.

I think you need to buy (have)  iPhoto to be fully compatible... ( sad but true)
Otherwise the RAW Camera downloads will not work...

Simon,

it’s not going to work on 10.7, unfortunately, because Apple isn’t providing RAW updates for that OS anymore. Why it isn’t working in 10.10 though, I can’t say. It should. Maybe try opening Applications > Utilities > Console > All Messages and see if anything shows up when you try to view the images?

BTW, if you don’t want to update from 10.7, you might consider FastRawViewer (http://www.fastrawviewer.com/). Haven’t tried it myself, but it’s gotten good reviews.

Hello,

Thanks for all the advise. I don’t know what I did except I opened Nikon Message Centre 2 and checked for up dates. It came up with “ There are no updates available at the moment”.

I closed it and check the “D810 Raw NEF images” folder and now the previews are showing. I have know idea why it did this. This is on my home Mac Pro which is running 10.7.5.

I will going to my studio soon for a shoot so I will see if the same thing works on the studio Mac Pro.

Cheers

Simon
