Thanks to everyone who took time to make suggestions. I purchased a Nikon D70s with three DX series lenses( two fixed focal length and one zoom).  I also got a Manfrotto 190Pro/141RC tripod, and both an SB 800 & 600SB flash units to try working with the Nikon creative lighting system. As most of you stated, there wasn't much difference between the Nikon and the Canon after handling both at a number of shops. Here in Australia the Canon seems excessively overpriced compared to the USA.
