Title: Gallery of images of the Guinness Storehouse captured on a Sony A7r
Post by: Enda Cavanagh on November 04, 2014, 12:55:25 pm
Howdy folks.

This summer I was commissioned by Diageo to photograph the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. Located at James’s Gate in Dublin City Centre, it’s one of the most iconic structures in Ireland. In fact it’s the most visited tourist destination in the country. Photographing the building was a dream come through. The lighting is very subdued in the building and shooting was quite a challenging.  The client required a full set of marketing photos encompassing architectural photos as well as photos of the visitor experience throughout the Site. Most shooting was carried out of opening hours to have the building free to myself. The guys at Diageo have been amazing and supportive. A dream client. I enjoyed every minute of shooting the place.

Guinness of course is an institution in Ireland and the Storehouse is well worth a visit. Especially the Connoisseur Bar where you can get probably the best tasting Guinness on the planet!

For the first time I used a 35mm camera system. Mainly a sony a7r and Canon Tilt Shift lenses to photograph the building. I also occasionally used a Canon EOS 5D Mark iii when shooting hand held model shots. I must say the Sony A7r was a delight to use. The electronic viewfinder was a revelation coming from shooting with the Hasselblad H3D and it’s terrible screen. The quality of the sensor, the incredible dynamic range and the portability of this tiny camera is a amazing. Shooting with my Hasseblad on a view camera would not have been possible on this project, simply because of the short shooting windows I had to photograph the place. Speed and a view camera do not go hand in hand! Plus the subdued lighting suited the Sony better. I could use higher iso when required and the higher dynamic range really suited the subject. I did miss using the view camera shooting the project and was great to get to use it again recently.

I've spent an hour trying to upload images to my ftp but I just keep getting error 404 when I paste the url into my browsers. Don't know what I'm doing wrong. All my other images work when pasted into my browsers. So sorry for having to link to my site but you can see the gallery if you click here (http://blog.endacavanagh.com/guinness-storehouse-st-jamess-gate/) to see them on my blog where you can view them at full screen size

EDIT: Scratch that. I managed to upload the images to the FTP. But you should check on the blog for the full gallery anyway. There are 37 images there and optimised for retina displays.....I think! ;D

Good work. I like the pano format and the HDR-ish look. I've been to the Storehouse but at a young enough age that I was only allowed a sip of the product.   ;)

What a great project, with excellent results. This should get you clients with similar work --- assuming there is anything at all similar to be photographed.

Very nice work!  I found the tone-mapping tasteful in the architectural shots.

Thanks for all the comments guys. Glad you like them. The images aren't actually tone mapped Luke. :) I'm not really a fan of tonemapping

Interesting.  Could you share a little regarding your approach to post processing these?

Those Sony photos look superb in skilled hands.

Rand. I process them through Capture One 8 and than I usually use the Nik Software suite for noise reduction where necessary, processing and sharpening of the image. Sometime I fuse the images in Photomatix before using Nik plugin. The dynamic range on the Sony is fantastic and gives you a lot of room to play around with the image

Wow, great place and even though the main subject would be 'stout' I suppose which is fluid and opaque, the images look crispy and clear and alltogether leave a mighty strong impression, gotta visit when I'm ever there, great work ;-)

Ok I uploaded the slideshow again using prophoto. Images look much better and crisper. Although for some reason they colours are still garish in chrome. Also enabled for retina.

I use tonemapping as a generic term for the remapping of a tonal palette.  No specific technique is being referred to.  And definitely nothing negative is intended.

Interesting work. The interiors, particularly the first one above, border on looking like CGI to me. The exteriors don't have that look.

Is that because CGI's try to look like architectural photos? ;)

Ah, the color seems calmer now on my iPad. Still I quite liked 'em as they were originally.

love the images (I'm a sucker for tanks, pipes, industrial processes)

going to Ireland for the first time next fall and have put the Storehouse on the itinerary - any other recommendations?

How much time will you have in Ireland? Do you want to stay in Dublin or will you rent a car and do a bit of driving?

Hi Ed,

Great images of an iconic building.  I feel the texture of the space and age of the process in these photographs!

Question for you as an AP considering heading the A7r route.....Have you encountered any instances of the the shutter induced vibration noted by others?
I'm assuming you made these with the Canon TSE's?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Andrew

Not yet Andrew. I have been using the camera in pretty low light situations most of the time so I am shooting at different shutter speeds slower than the problem shutters speeds highlighted by others.

should have been more specific - we're planning a 2 week trip with 2 days in Dublin then picking up a car then heading to Knowth, etc then up to Rathmullen and vicinity then few days down thru Sligo and Mayo and on to the Dingle Penninsula then staying a night each in Kinsale and Wicklow before leaving from Dublin.

Particularly interested in the really old ruins, some nice little towns, and beautiful/interesting landscapes.

thanks - and thanks again for the gallery

Ya you will love Newgrange. Do you mean Rathmullan in Donegal. I've never been to Rathmullan but Donegal is beautiful. You've got Glenveagh National Park and the best beaches in the Counrty. Great for walking and photography. Falcaragh beach is stunning. As is Bloody Foreland, the Slieve League cliffs and Mount Errigal. Glencolmcille is a lovely village in a stunning setting.

I'm from Sligo originally. Ben Bulben Mountain is lovely. We've got great beaches too. Strandhill, Rosses Point and Enniscrone are great. You can get a seaweed bath in Strandhill! Supposed to be amazing  :D The area around Ben Bulben is very nice. You can drive to Glencar Waterfall. and you can drop into the Yeats Tavern. My cousin Damien runs it ;D It's just a couple of hundred meters from WB Yeats grave. Talking of Yeats you could do the Lough Gill drive and check out Parkes castle.

Mayo is lovely. Westport in Mayo propably pips Dingle for me as my favourite town in the country. People are really chilled out and it's a great place to stay. It's surrounded by lovely countryside. You can drive past the famous Croagh Patrick, past Louisburgh, and on to the stunning drive past Doo Lough and on to Killary Harbour. You can drive onto Connemara in Galway which is lovely or else take the diagonal road that brings you back to Westport where you will see some lovely mountain and forest scenery. Connemara is well worth a visit if you have the time.

The scenery in County Kerry is the most spectacular in the country. The Dingle pensisula with, Dingle, Coumeenole Beach, Cloghar Head, Slea Head and Dunmore Head, The Connor Pass, Mount Brandaon are all stunning. The Ring of Kerry (the next peninsula down) would need another day or 2. The scenery is stunning there. Loads to see . The lakes of Killarney, the many forests, the old Kenmare Killarney road (which you can just walk) Muckross House and walk, Torc waterfall, Sneem, Kenmare town, the ladies view, the Black valley.

The area around Kinsale is great. Kinsale is fab for fish. The whole drive along the coast to Schull, Ballydehob is well worth a drive. The towns in Cork are great as is Cork city itself. The Cork people are great craic so you should have a lot of fun.

I hope that will keep you busy. There's loads to see and do.
