Title: Mac Pro 2013 memory
Post by: BernardLanguillier on October 31, 2014, 03:57:41 am
Dear experts,

I have 64GB RAM in my Mac pro 2013 running 10.9, but I am experiencing pretty often "out of memory" situations when dealing with large stitches.

I am running in parallel C1 Pro 8 for conversion, Autopano pro and/or PTGUI for pano computation, Helicon Focus for DoF stacking and PS CS6 for images edition. I used not to see these errors in 10.6.8 btw. I am a bit disapointed in the way 10.9 manages virtual memory.

I think that the only way forward is to switch to 128GB, but I am worried by the cost and speed of the current modules.

That hasn't changed in months so I was wondering whether someone had early visibility on the availability/price of Mac Pro compatible 32GB RAM modules running at 1866 Mhz?

Thank you.

Cheers,
Bernard

Why don't you ask OWC ?

RamJet claims to have 32GB @ 1866Mhz RAM modules:

Bernard,

have you checked the size of the disk / partition where your Photoshop scratch file is being stored? Probably it is too small?

Regards

Thomas

Bernard,

Thomas,

Thanks. Yes, the first one is a fast SSD (900 MB/s read/write) with 450 GB free space and the second one is a TB2 raid 6 disk with 9.5TB available (itself 500 MB/s read/write).

I don't think that this is where the problem lies... ;)

PS CS6 is configured to use 42GB out of 64GB, which seems reasonable to me as well.

Bernard

Good find, thank you!

Does someone have experience with them?

They have this disclaimer "*32GB DIMMs: Due to configuration of the 2013 Mac Pro processor, 32GB modules will register at a bus speed of 1066Mhz.  All other size modules register at a bus speed of 1866Mhz.". I this technically accurate?

Any idea why OWC does not yet have their own version?

Cheers,
Bernard

Bernard, I'm afraid it's a technical limitation... take a look here: http://macperformanceguide.com/MacPro2013-OWC_128GB-bandwidth.html

Thanks. If the limitation is CPU related, it may still makes sense to buy faster ram anticipating a possible CpU swap in the future I guess.

Re Ramjet

...Does someone have experience with them?

I have bought RAM from them on several occasions and was completely satisfied. I think they are a good outfit

I won't count on that... I'll bet that current chipset will not support future CPUs that are able to use 128 GB at full speed, at least not with out a BIOS upgrade, that seems unlikely to come from apple  ???

Indeed, you are probably right.

Thanks Chris.

All in all, I have decided to go with OWC, they have served me well in the past.

Upgrade done.

Bernard

Bernard,

Will you please let us know how satisfied you are - or not - with the OWC upgrade RAM?

Thanks,

Stan

hello Bernard,

I find it hard to believe you are out of memory on Mavericks with 64 gig- or you are doing really something special.
Mavericks uses all the memory it can get for caching and releases it as soon as it is needed.. Also it uses compressed ram so on occasions  you have more than 64 ram... maybe 80 or more...
I have done a stitch with 72 images of a d800 that went to 100.000 x100.000 pixels... pt Gui did not need more than my 32G ram...
I have never any problems... Maybe if you do all the things at once....  (?) did you check the activity monitor and look at what the programs are using?
The visual red bar in memory dept of the activity monitor does not mean you are out of memory- it means Mavericks used all the ram ( for caching and so on ) and has to release some of it. (Mavericks -at last- uses all the memory, instead of leaving it untouched- it is one of the reasons i really like the system)

Indeed, PTgui isn't very memory hungry at all, the problem is apparently indeed coming from the concurrent usage of C1 Pro, Helicon Focus, PT Gui, Autopano and PS CS6. When many large files (10+ 200+ mega pixels stitches) are open in PS6, it typically gets to the max RAM pretty quickly (~40 GB).

Anyway, installed the 128GB last night, so I hope it is solved. First test didn't reveal any basic issues, but I didn't won't have the opportunity to test for real for another couple of weeks.

Now I need to see for how much I can sell back the original 64GB Apple modules, it shouldn't be too difficult. :)

Cheers,
Bernard
