Hi All
Because of other PC problems I changed the way I let cookies 'work' on my PC but sadly this forum apparently uses slightly different cookies to other fora using persistent cookies - here I can not use "High" setting it must be "Medium".
Interestingly on "High" the system says it is logging me in then returns to the page that says 'login or register'.
I would prefer to maintain a higher level of security so is there anything about the board setup that can be done? It would seem thatit is something to do with Compact Privacy Policy of the cookie.

PS I had previously also made this URL a permitted website I have just redone that and hoping that do not speak too soon it seems OK now
PPS Having re booted it seems that this forum will now let me login OK but unlike before it does not remember me! So I have to login each visit

The problem lies not with security as such, or with this site, but with the way you employ the combined power of Internet Explorer with Internet Explorer's security model.
Unfortunately, this doesn't work very well. You would probably be better served by setting a "custom" security level, where you explicitly permit this site to set cookies, but keep your restrictions for other sites.
An alternative is to move to a more modern browser with a different security model, or to let a personal Internet security program such as Norman deal with it for you.
Do whatever works best for you.

To elaborate on what Jan is recommending to you, do the following in IE 6:
>Internet Options
>Security
>Privacy (which should say Custom; if it doesn't see below where I talk about Advanced Privacy Settings and follow those recommendations first);
>Sites
>in the window, type in www.luminous-landscape.com
>Click Allow, click OK; this will make this site trusted - IE6 will accept its cookie automatically;
>Go back to Privacy and click Advanced - you will get Advanced Privacy Settings
>Check the first box that says Override Automatic Cookie Handling;
>For first party cookies I select Prompt (so you get warned about those not on the list we determined above).
>For third party cookies I select Block (that is almost ALWAYS advertising and possibly a risk area)
>I check the box Always Allow Session Cookies, because these disappear after you quit the website you are viewing and this options eases web-browsing.
I've had no security or privacy problems with this combination of cookie-handling settings.

I had previously used the settings you advise but for some reason I could not resolve they failed to do what they had always done. The 'performance' of them varied and became very flakey in that one or two sites still 'worked' but others just would not let me login or remain registered. This happened after I uninstalled Norton Systemworks 2004 - boy was that program giving me grief. It had worked very nicely for a long time then the LiveUpdate failed and I followed every Symantec instruction and the problem only got worse. Even after the uninstall I had the issues like the the one I describe.
I am now trialling Kaspersky Anti Virus.
I will likely try the 'controlled' setup you detail & I agree should work well as it did for me originally.

Norton AntiVirus is becoming increasingly troublesome, and they don't make it easy to get satisfactory technical support. I'm seriously considering abandoning Symantec after many years of using their software. Sometimes also I find it necessary to turn-off Microsoft's Anti-spyware Beta, because it too can interfere with normal web browser performance.
