Title: Epson 3880 on wifi - is it possible?
Post by: Gellman on October 10, 2014, 06:29:38 pm
Does anyone know if a 3880 can be used through a wireless network connection? Epson tech support drone told me I must use either a USB or ethernet cable. It will be a real ordeal to run an ethernet cable to my printer. Has anyone figured out how to do this with a Mac and an AirPort Express? Thanks in advance for sharing your expertise.

Theoretically no reason why this shouldn't work as a shared USB printer hooked up to an AirPort Express.
Let us know if/how it works.

This may be another solution: http://www.megabuy.com.au/tp-link-tl-pa411-kit-500mbps-mini-powerline-adapter-starter-kit-p352854.html?

I only raise this because a quick browse of the Apple info on printers on an Airport Express was less than reassuring.

It should work on your network once you plug it into the Express.

I have used an AE to extend ethernet laser printers for years, in both old and new versions of the AE.  The new one also has a label maker on the USB port and it works fine but often the Mac doesn't know if the device (USB) is 'online' or what label stuff is loaded.  I've heard of other 'issues' w/ USB printer sharing/extension so I'd strongly urge ethernet.  That said, if that is the primary purpose of the AE, then you may want to consider powerline converters instead which have gotten really good in the last 5 years and avoid any vagaries of wireless and realworld data transfer rates vs. what wireless *should* do.

I must be getting dumber as I get older.  The Airport Express is next to the computer and the printer is on the other side of the room. All I gotta do is move the AE next to the printer and attach a short Ethernet cable to it there. Duh. Thanks to all who replied.

Getting older could be a problem but it sure beats the alternative. Keep printing... :D
