I'm looking for a high quality printer for a coffee table book for a client. 11x14", ~200 copies, hard bound. There are lots of short run digital presses out there, but I would love to hear from anyone with actual experience with particular printers. For this project, quality is key. Thanks!

Pikto (http://www.pikto.com/cad/photobooks-overview) Pikto produces very fine quality. They are located in Toronto but they ship internationally.

Thanks Mark, I am looking for that kind of printer too..
-
Thanks for the information! In looking at their website it seems that they are focused on albums rather than books.
-
I had them do a REAL BOOK and it was very, very good. So did a friend. As I live here in Toronto, I've also seen samples of their products at their place of work and I assure you they do make books. If you are interested in whether they can meet your needs, best is to get in touch with them and ask.
-
Thank you so much for the 1st hand experience! I will definitely contact them
-
Now I see the problem -- I looked at PiCto books not Pikto Books...
-
OK - the first word of my first reply is a hyperlink. Click on it and it will take you to the right guys. :-)

These are done on an Indigo, right? Anybody have a good source for short-run offset books?

No idea what they print with. They don't say on the site. Regarding quantity, I think they can make pretty much any size print run you need. Best is to contact them.

From their price list:

Ah - OK, I didn't click that link :-).

I wasn't didn't even know you could get short runs with offset presses but some searching turns up quite a few. I see the dilemma now. Hard to get photographers feedback. possibly searching based on company name to see what turns up?
I found this list

Yes, that's the problem as I see it. There are no end of choices, and if you're going to invest $10,000 or $20,000 in a project, you want to have high confidence in the outcome. If you work with a design firm, that's one of the things that you (may) get, but that ratchets up the costs even more.

Jim's answer may well be right on this website if they are still operational:
Bangladesh (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/100-books.shtml)
I have a copy of Michael's book and I have seen the original photographs beside it. The printing job was REALLY very well done.

Ive printed soft cover brochures with these guys: print24 (http://www.print24.com/uk) and the quality has been decent considering the price. All online based so cant really call the printers themselves or anything, just customer service. But its still fine.

That's great, Mark. Thanks!
[Added later: Unfortunately, the printer's site appears moribund. Still, it was great to read about the process.]

I have used PhotoBook Canada twice and am extremely pleased with their print books. My first one was a Landscape XL at 11.5' x 17" with 62 pages. It was done in Malaysia, and shipped here very quickly. Had a smaller one done about 1.5 years ago and it was printed here in Canada.
I tried Pikto last year, but was not pleased with the results. The greys were quite grainy, the darks were plugged up pretty bad and the gamut was pretty small. I know they have a new printer which should be an improvement. When I get enough new images that I want to put into a book, will try them again. I sent the exact same images to be done in Mississauga by PictureBook and the quality was much better, although you could see some roller marks if you hold the page a certain angles, but the image quality was way better.
