Title: Photoshop Focus Selection Tool
Post by: Remo Nonaz on August 19, 2014, 07:15:01 pm
I am working on a focus stack image and want to use the new focus selection tool but the tool is not in my copy of Photoshop, which is an up-to-date version of the Adobe CC for Photographers package. The option is not in the Selection drop down where it should be.

These are the version spec on Photoshop CC:
Adobe Photoshop Version: 14.2.1 (14.2.1 20140207.r.570 2014/02/07:23:00:00) x64
Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit
Version: 6.1 Service Pack 1
System architecture: Intel CPU Family:6, Model:10, Stepping:9 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, HyperThreading

From what I'm reading online, it appears that this feature was just added this summer. I see that my version is listed as 2014/02/07. (YYYYMMDD?)

How do I get the most up to date version to use this tool?

You need to install Photoshop CC 2014. What you have is Photoshop CC

I've done the upgrades to the CC. Does this require that I de-install and re-install the application?

Photoshop CC 2014 is a different application, independent of Photoshop CC. There is no need to uninstall the CC. You should see it in the Adobe CC Apps section.
It is a little bit confusing because of the name choice

I found this post in the Adobe support pages:

Adobe Application Manager Doesn’t Show Updates
If you know that an update is available but no updates show up when you select Help>Updates… try the following solution:

1. Quit Photoshop
2. Remove the Adobe Application Manager (AAM) Cache by clearing the contents following folder:

Mac: /Volumes/%Volume Name%/Users/%Username%/Library/Application Support/Adobe/AAMUpdater/1.0
Win: C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Adobe\AAMUpdater\1.0
3. Launch Photoshop and select Help>Updates… to check for updates

I suspect this is my issue and I'll have a go at it this evening.

Hi, Photoshop CC2014 is not an update for Photoshop CC. You will never get it from Help > Updates.

You have to look for it in the CC panel, as in the attached image. If you cannot find it, restart the CC panel

Adobe is not helping in this confusion:

What is the most current version?
2014 release of Photoshop CC

The most current version for Photoshop CC is 2014.0
The most current version of Adobe Camera Raw for Photoshop CC is 8.6 on both Macintosh and Windows.
Photoshop CC

The most current version for Photoshop CC is 14.2.1
The most current version of Adobe Camera Raw for Photoshop CC is 8.6 on both Macintosh and Wind
ows.

I found this link http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/ (http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/) that spells it out pretty clearly. It also includes information on migrating your settings and plug-ins.

I'll work this out tonight. Thanks everyone.

Yes, it is confusing, there are actually two versions of Adobe camera Raw 8.6, one for CC & CC 2014 and another version for Photoshop CS6. If you have also LR, then the develop module does not have the new functionality of Adobe Camera Raw 8.6 CC, only the updates for new cameras available in the ACR 8.6 for Photoshop CS6

List night I went to do this 'upgrade'. Adobe still does not identity what you will be downloading when you click the download button associated with Photoshop CC. I find this rather odd given that they do quite a bit of explaining what all the different versions of CC can and can't do. But it didn't matter. There was something wrong with the web site and nothing would download anyway. I'll try again this evening.
