That said, I admire the courage of street photographers. No way would I try that anymore.

That's too funny (or sad)! Well, at least for me. I once had an acquaintance who "preyed" on girls like that. He would board the last bus from downtown out, looking for single, sad-looking girls, meaning their night out did not turn out as expected, and now they are going home "empty handed." He would strike a conversation, nice and polite, and according to him, more time than not, he would take the girl to his home that night. At least I witnessed one such occasion.

The feet not grounded in a reality, the lines on the wall that compartmentalize her, the posture that fits so well and the slightly grainy look.

This image was taken on an underground train station with two sets of tracks between us. I was shooting with my camera at my waist so I doubt she saw me. She would have had to run up a flight of stairs and down another to confront me, so I was safe. I have been confronted three or four times in the past two weeks. Speak calmly and walk away at the first opportunity seems to work. If confronted I am 99.9% certain I have done nothing wrong.

Ah, I see! But still, shooting on the streets these days (especially in the cities) is surely risky. Where do you live?

I live in Scotland. I think I have been threatened twice in 14 years of shooting. Been spoken to a few times but ended amicably. The problem is mostly in the photographer's mind and if you get over it and behave sensibly then you would be unlucky to be assaulted or worse. Some photographer's advocate using a prime lens and get in close to the subject which may upset the subject you are photographing I use a Lumix GX7 and a 14 - 150 lens which some will think is too long a zoom. The camera has a tilting Lcd so I shoot a lot with the camera at my waist and pretend to fiddle with it and shoot a subject and move on.
