Title: More from Killarney
Post by: luxborealis on July 11, 2014, 06:26:01 pm
Following on from the first few photographs posted previously, (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?topic=91242.0) here are a few more from this gem of a park in Ontario's near north. The original raw files were made with a tripod-mounted Nikon D800E at 20mm, 105mm, 24mm and 24mm respectively, then were processed in LR. C&C welcome. Enjoy!

All good, but I really like the pines.  8)

I think it's the sort of picture that looks good printed small and framed with a lot of space.

They are all classically beautiful. I think #2 is also my favorite.

Since you did ask for C&C, I'll have to say that it would be nice if in the first one you had positioned the clouds directly over the island.   ;)

#1 (West Wind) is beautiful.

#2 is terrific! Love everything about it.

Terry, I like #1 and #3 best.
I'd like to see the OSA lake scene in colour. The moss colours and delicate pattern on the foreground rocks would contrast nicely with the canoe and white mountains in the distance. Have you used the 24-85mm lens for this shot?

Hi Les,

Thanks for your comments. I used the AF-D Nikkor 24mm ƒ2.8 lens with a polarizer. I've described the making of this photo on my Blog - the first Before & After article, which can be found here (http://luxborealis.com/blog/?p=1422).

Here is the original colour version...

Thanks, Terry, also for the link to your blog article, it's good to see the different versions of the image. The 24mm prime does much better job than the wide end on the 24-85mm lens.

I like the color version, it brings back the Killarney memories much more vividly than the monochrome one. It's almost like being there.
The strong light and white mountains make it challenging to shoot at midday. I was there about 15 years ago, and took similar photos with a rotational Seitz Roundshot 35mm camera without a polarizer from the southern shore, not far from the portage to Killarney Lake. The polarizer makes a huge difference. And my canoe is also white.
Was this the location where you took this picture or was it further west?

My preference are 1 and 3 , especially 3 in color !

I find it more in accordance with this very quiet region.

Agreed on the lens comment as I also have the 24-85mm. Since then, I've added the AF-S 18-35mm which is, surprisingly, slightly better than the AF-D 24 f/2.8.

Regarding the location - you're bang on. We were just past the campsite on the south side. We had stopped for lunch in a bay on a very narrow (1-2m) lovely sandy beach and wandered up to the rocky point.

I think that #s 1 and 4 make an interesting pair, with contrasting skies.

#1 and #3 for me.
The clouds in #1 really add interest to the whole scene.
The positioning of the boat and overall exposure in #3 make this a successful shot.

The Canadian Shield is an epic place, you could spend 300 years
in Killarney and not even scratch the surface image wise. All great
images, west winds for me.

All very fine. I like the arrangement of objects in #1: good seeing!
These remind me to do more shooting during the day.
