By "raw file," are you saying it is out-of-camera rendering? To me, it looks like strong Clarity is applied. The scene is rather gentle, so a more gentle processing might be more suitable?

No, the image started as a raw file. Post was 98% photoshop and the last little bit in LR4 where I did add clarity (+15-20).
I've taken to dodging and burning after a series of small, local contrast layers and hue/saturation layers.
I appreciate the feedback. My goal is to bring out the life in the image - not to add where there wasn't any to start with.

The other bit that I'll add is that this was shot mid-day in the fall. The lighting wasn't all that subtle to start with.

Yes, the clarity slider is very sensitive, use it with care.
Most of the time I use it in the 3 to 9 sometimes up to 18 for rather dull images.
This photo worth to spend some time for a good processing.

Lovely landscape, but I do find the light too harsh.

Contrast is a bit high but it's a pleasing landscape and there's not much to do with a mid-day light. Dave might have spent too much time in a local enotecca before post-processing his files… Just kidding, of course!

Well, if we all had $1 for every softly lit, golden toned Tuscan landscape image we've seen or made, we'd all live there or someplace as nice. Why be like everyone else? Ha!
