Hi Guys,
as the title say - I looking for a comparison of where ACR vs C1 is these days. I have a college who is up to her neck with problems with C1, and so I have suggested ACR as the contender - (ACR/Lightroom) we are not interested in the catalog of lightroom, so essentially ACR is fine I would think.
However when I suggested this she replied will how good is ACR - well the files I have ever converted for her have been from ACR :-)
Does anyone know of someone who have done the comparison? I remember Jeff S, mention that Adobe had improved over Capture
thanks
Henrik
PS: Been a CaptureOne user since version 1.3 but I haven't liked it since version 4
PPS: I should say I do like its perspective correction features!

Hi,
Here are some:
http://www.lifeafterphotoshop.com/dxo-vs-lightroom-vs-capture-one-pro-best/
http://www.dpreview.com/articles/8219582047/raw-converter-showdown-capture-one-pro-7-dxo-optics-pro-8-and-lightroom-4/6
I have grown up with LR since early betas, so I am biased. Also, I am shooting landscape and not people. So skin reproduction is not important for me.
Personally, I much prefer Lightroom over Capture One, except I feel that C1 has less demosaic artifacts on my P45+. (I cannot talk about other backs).
The areas where Lightroom is better in my View are:
- Tone mapping of highlights and shadows
- Noise supression
- Handling of "as shoot" color balance
- Ease of color calibration with color checker card or QPcard using DNG Profile Editor, Color Checker Passport or QPcard software.
The areas I find C1 superior is:
- Less demosaic artefacts
Best regards
Erik

Thanks Erik,
I much appreciate your reply - we are not even talking about using PhaseOne camera, just Nikon D4 D3s and Canon 1D Mk 4
thanks again

Hi,
Many users prefer C1 anyway. But I guess you will see more responses.
If testing C1, try linear instead of film curve.
Best regards
Erik

I think much more depends on user skill and familiarity with the applications than on whatever technical differences there are between them. As well, there are differences of features, the appreciation of which can also be much influenced by habit and personal preference. The best thing to do is to download free trials of both, try them, and see which you prefer for which purposes.

The problem is at the moment she is having so many issues with capture one that if ACR is even close it should be a no brainer for her.
I am just experimenting with the image alignment and perspective control features to see how they compare
She has been a long time user of Capture, but have also fought many battles with it and not always come out winning. to me it's been a very costly affair to continue to use the program. But that is just me.
I am both Mac handed and PC handed, and I use both softwares, though I personally have been leaning towards ACR as my preferred raw converter - but I also don't just do photography but other graphics tasks
Thanks for your input - she is in the end one who needs to decide to continue with C1 and waste time and money when it will not do what she expects it to do.

Hi Henrik,
Did she contact Phase One support?
Cheers,

Even if you are not interested in the catalogue side of things, use LR as the interface of the develop module is way better than ACR's clunky UI.
LR can simply import your folder structure as is, so you carry on working with that system as normal.
Though the advantages a catalogue/DB can give you can save you a lot of time if you use that in conjunction with whatever folder system you currently prefer. It's not an either/or situation as both systems have complementary strengths, without adding any weaknesses. Win, win. ;D

I see this done/said a lot in comparison tests. Quote from linked comparison.
"Personally I’d rather have punchy images straight out of the box, which is why I prefer DxO’s and Capture One’s rendition to Adobe Camera Raw’s."
Well why not shoot jpegs then is my response. Job done.
Two things wrong with this statement
1. You should always compare the best version you can get of an image as the whole point of the software for most people is to optimise your images
2. You can usually set your own default conversion to be whatever you like, so point is completely moot.
Also he tries to recover highlights in the comparison by using the exposure slider, not the highlight slider. There may be a different result if the right tools were used.

I agree.

I can say that after working with the month / 2 month trials of LR and C1 and Optics Pro and PS ACR and PS Elements (and ZPS and…)
-- what I try to do can be done well-enough with LR or C1 or Optics Pro; but it always seems easier with LR
-- it doesn't matter what other people say: your colleague needs to download a free trial, read some tutorials and make a determined effort to get the best out of some photos.

Hi Bart,
yes she did and she even had a teamviewer session
but it still didn't resolve the issue - a couple of her assistance have similar issues on newer Mac's

I just want her to make up her mind and pick one and be done with it, so she can get work done and not waste time and money on something that currently isn't
C1 make improve and fix things but in the mean time she needs to have a backup program that she can use in such situations

It's not really clear whether her prbblems are with C1 not working properly from a technical point of view, or from not understanding it and perhaps lacking what Isaac called determination. That latter kind of problem can easily be carried over to the next software.

Nope ;-)

Hi John,
The latest problems is that she would grade a shoot, straighten images and make her adjustments. She would turn the program off return the following day, review the selections but the edits would not show up. If she created a variant, it would appear.
When the would straighten an image, the image wouldn't be cropped, but show gaps around the image.
Just another little frustrating thing
Thanks
Henrik
Ps: I have tried to locate the preference files, but I simply can't find them
