Title: B&W inks for Epson 3880

Might get a new 3880 for B&W only.

Looked at the Cone K7 Piezo inks and they are very expensive (~$450 set of 9 4-ounce bottles, or 1.5 times the capacity of the 3880 refillable carts.).

MIS Associates had some much cheaper at maybe $150 for a set, but they informed me their UT7 and UT3D didn't work with the 3880 and had none for it either.

Any other B&W inksets for the 8-9 carts available in the 3880?

Not for nothing but, you might want to look at simply using the 3880 inkset and look into Roy Harrington's Quad Tone Rip (http://www.quadtonerip.com/html/QTRoverview.html).

Note, even if you do decide to swap inksets, you'll prolly still want to look at the Quad Tone Rip if excellent B&W is your goal...

Also, sometimes you get what you pay for, cheaper is sometimes not so cheap. Penny wise, pound foolish comes to mind...

I converted a 3880 to piezography and am extremely pleased with the results. The cost of inks are really a non issue when you take all other costs into account.

MIS inks work perfectly well with the 3880. You'll just have to fill your own carts. And there's no need to use the UT7 or UT3D sets either.

I like the EB6 pure carbon inkset. It's pure carbon and, therefore, fadeproof, and is more neutral than Piezography K7 Carbon.

Only thing is, MIS inks don't work on glossy paper, since they're uncoated pigment particles with no resin.

So why would one use the Quad Tone Rip over Epson's Advanced BW Mode?

For linearising the output, which I guess is more necessary for non-Epson papers. Keith Cooper has a few articles on his site going into the details.
