Was out at the Bonneville Salt Flats with my son in March. Not a great day for photography, but great for father and son. Wanted to post this for comment because I seem to be drawn to the bleakness of the desert. I wouldn't call it beautiful, but I am strangely drawn to it. Different strokes for different folks, but I think it warrants study.

There would be some very good possibilities in B&W, especially with higher than normal Clarity/Mid-tone contrast.

Thanks, Terry. I looked at it in BW. I don't think the graphic composition is strong enough for that, however. Somehow, I've got to find a way to get back to this genre of subject and explore it further.

A different take on the same image, but this is about what I was describing, with a little toning thrown in.

Dave, have you ever tried Dan Margulis' processing in L.A.B. space (http://www.amazon.com/Photoshop-LAB-Color-Adventures-Colorspace/dp/0321356780/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1399337803&sr=1-3&keywords=Dan+Margulis) (or should it be L*a*b* space)? This looks like a prime candidate to distill more colors from the bleak desert scene than RGB can. Warning: this is a highly controversial subject, so pardon me while I put on a flame-resistant outfit ;)

Terry, my God! Interesting interpretation. The harshness of your interpretation is consistent with the terrain.
Slobodan, I will check it out, something new to learn... and many miles to go before I sleep.
OK, I ordered it SB... and just when you all were encouraging me not to go "over the top" ;)

I come from an area in Africa that is similar to this, the Kalahari, so I am a sucker for this kind of landscape.

So I read Margulis' book over the weekend-fascinating. Wonder if there are any caveats to what he says vs the 8-9 years of technological innovation since it was written. Nevertheless, I had a quick go at this this morning. I recognize that there is an aesthetic about how far to go, but I am impressed with the way subtle differences can be emphasized in Lab space. Not trying to make a silk purse, just an experiment. The Lab color space does bear some more exploration.

That's what I was talking about. Glad you like it.

As another experiment: perhaps lowered-contrast as-if it was a bright-overcast day in the desert; but then pick out the colors.
An interesting idea, too. What I have not done is to try and re-create this within an RGB color space. A very interesting book.
