Thoughts?

Well composed.

Nice! The clouds are a bonus!
-
I hope you don't mind me fiddling with your picture... I thought that little roof in the left-hand corner was distracting.
Otherwise I agree with the other guys!

It's a strong composition with powerful tones, this suits the subject matter.

I like this one even better, removing the part of the top makes it cleaner.
-
I don't agree with William because I think the little roof makes a great target for the long leading line of the main roof. But I do agree that it's an interesting composition.
-
I would be very happy with either version alone, but having seen both, I must agree with Russ.

Hmmm... interesting. The reason I said "well composed" was precisely for the existence of that "distraction," as it provides a visual counterbalance for the heaviness of the chimneys. You know, like Archimedes lever :)

I think you may need to post one of your photographs of Archimedes' lever for those who don't get the reference. Just to elevate the discussion, of course. ;)

Only if you provide me with a place to stand! ;)

Reference to Archimedes was rhetorical, of course, but I was referring to a classical rule of balance in composition, i.e., the further an element is from the center, the smaller it can be in order to balance the bigger elements closer to the center.

I don't know...aesthetic judgement: balance vs simplification/declutter. Photographer's choice in my view.
-
Point taken Russ and Slobodan.
I agree with David however, "photographer's choice".... (but I think that roof is a distraction... :) )

I liked the little roof, as Russ and Slobodan say, it adds balance and a place for your eyes to stop before they run right off the edge of the roof. Thanks for the comments everyone.

Yeah, got lucky with those as this isn't a place I visit often.
-
I'll take it ...just the way it is ~! ;)

Use your soap box. ;) :)

I vote for the roof staying but the alternative is also viable. A very nice graphic image and the toning is spot on.

That was my thought exactly. Was trying to decide between cloning it out and cropping off the left side of the image.
Mike.

The absence of little roof is good. IMHO, naturally.
