ANZAC day in New Zealand and Australia respects the huge sacrifice of life at Gallipoli, Turkey, in the First World War and, lately, all those who served or serve in the armed services.
The Gallipoli campaign was a disaster for the Allies but created strong bonds between those two countries and, more recently, Turkey. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anzac_Day for some info.
