The idea is good; the post stands out well, with nice texture, and I like the off-centre composition. I think you could do with some more vertical space, though, certainly at the top, and it would be good to see the whole of the knot at the lower end of the post.

Hi Todd, Like Jeremy I think it was a good idea, but I also think it didn't quite come off. Jeremy was right about the first version, but in my estimation the second version doesn't get there either. The biggest problem I see in the second version is the bright sky into which the snow cap on the post blends. I suspect that to make this work you'd have to have either rocks or trees in the background -- something that would make the whole post stand out. In the first version you almost had that, but it disappeared in the second version. Keep shooting.

I agree with Russ. If you'd been a couple of feet further to your right, you'd have the tree behind the stump, which would give you the contrast.

Todd - I would go back to some basics here...i.e....why "that" post? Compositions are not ends in and of themselves...I frequently ask myself...is what I'm composing...actually worth composing? Are the elements compelling or really interesting? To wit, I don't think there is anything remarkable or special about that post...with the snow on top it's sort of interesting...and starts to have something going on...but then the snow cap is nearly buried in white of sky. /Brandt
