Rob,

Yes, of course.  There are 3 types, the mugger, gharial and saltwater croc.

Or is it environmental portaiture ?

Thanks, Rajan, it wasn't one of the species high on the list in my youthful mind. I did have a keen awareness of cobras, scorpions of several varieties and things of that kind, and rabies, but crocs slipped though my mental defence nets. For some equally odd reason, tigers didn't enter the equation either. Part of the year I lived on the Bay of Bengal (where the theory was that the sharks lived out beyond the third row of breakers), and the rest up in the Nilgiris (tigers, once upon a time). Up there, we used to do a lot of cross-country rambling (scouts!) and the only wild things I saw were boar; dangerous enough, but they don't climb trees... wonderful landscapes. Wasted on a kid, but that's life.

Rob - India has (had) astonishing wildlife but the rapidly expanding circumference of urbanization and settlement has actuated retreat of the habitat, much of which now finds itself confined to the designated national parks and sanctuaries.
