Title: Samyang 14mm f2.8 Lightroom profile for Nikon D800e
Post by: Rob Reiter on February 07, 2014, 01:30:28 pm
I'll be taking delivery of this lens Monday but my online searches for a profile to correct the famous "mustache" distortion have only turned up a profile for the Nikon D700, also a full-frame camera like my D800e. Will that profile work for me?

I'd guess so, but it's pretty easy to make your own.
The, free, Adobe Lens profile creator utility works well and is well documented. You only need a basic inkjet printer(preferably A3) to print out the  targets.

Answering my own question here...

Yes, the D700 Lightroom profile for this lens appears to work just fine with the 14mm Samyang/Rokinon lens.

Haven't had much time to shoot with it but it does seem to be as sharp as people have claimed. Focus, even with the circuitry to use Nikon's focus confirmation, is still hit or miss. For example, when focusing at infinity, the confirmation indicator in the viewfinder is on from the infinity marking on the lens down to about the 12 foot mark. And the closer mark seems a little sharper at infinity. Similar indicated focus at closer distances. More testing will be done. Fortunately, even at 16x24 inch print size, the depth of field of this focal length results in shots that have an overall feel of sharpness. Closer inspection, at 100% in Photoshop, is needed to notice focus discrepancies.

So, for $275, I think this lens was worth it. Now if I can just get a clear night, out under dark skies, to try some Milky Way shots...

I downloaded from Adobe the lens profile for the Samyang 14mm f2.8 lens and it worked fine in LR 4, but now doesn't appear in the menu in LR 4.2

Now, I'm on LR5 and I want to use the profile in the new software.  I did manage to find the profile in

C:\Users\Peter\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles\1.0

and it's named "Samyang 14mm f2.8 ED AS IF UMC.lcp.txt"

and I made a new "Samyang" directory in

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.2\Resources\LensProfiles\1.0

since that's where all the other lens profiles are located, and I copied the profile into that directory.

However, LR5 doesn't see it - either the directory nor the profile.

Could I have an obsolete file format for profiles?  Adobe lens profile downloader doesn't even seem to list the 14mm Samyang anymore.

Any ideas anyone?

Make sure the profile is in;
C:\Users\<your user name here>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles\1.0

As far as I know the format has never changed.

That's exactly where it is, and where I found it from the LR4 install, namely

C:\Users\Peter\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles\1.0

It's the only profile in there.

However, in

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.2\Resources\LensProfiles\1.0

I see all the profiles that LR5 sees.  That's why I put the Samyang profile there.
