After Todd's very good Wizard of Oz, I couldn't resist. . .

Is that the American Dream gone wrong?

Actually, the two shots remind me more of Star Wars and those insufferable little robots: R-something D-something. Dots seems a notion too far.

No, Rob, I'd say it's more like a childhood surrendering to maturity. Those pumps are in Clouterville, Louisiana, which was a cotton town with a cotton mill in the thirties. It's mostly gone now. I was through there once or twice in earlier years. Here's a shot from 2002. You can see the pumps in this one too. When I came back almost exactly four years later the buildings on both sides of the pumps were gone.

Thanks Todd. I'm old enough to have watched this kind of thing all over the U.S. I've concentrated on it on the western prairies, but the deep south has a lot of stories like this too.

Somehow the pumps reminded me of the Monoliths in the film 2001 A Space Odyssey. Future humans will find them and wonder what they were for and what special powers they possess.
