Title: Asking for a discount for promoting a national firms product on your website.
Post by: dgberg on December 16, 2013, 05:32:22 am
I will start this off by saying it may not be the proper venue to divulge a companys name on an open forum then ask to be a business or associate sponsor with that company.
I am already assuming that my sales volume will not qualify me for what I am about to discuss but here goes anyway.

We will be offering Unisub Corporations "Chromaluxe Metal Prints" new for us in 2014.
My web developer is presently working on several pages for our website for this new product.
I have recently talked to Unisubs regonial sales manager discussing our new venture
and asked him to send me revelant copy and photographs for our web pages.
Most if not all of what he sent me is large splashy fonts with the Chromaluxe metal name.
I am well aware of name/brand recognition and do not want to shoot myself in the foot, but!
Here is the big question and being a small fish in the sea I may already know the answer.
I am happy to promote the brand name as it is but am considering asking for some form of compensation small as it may be.
For the time being lets just pick a number lets say a 10% discount on the metal substrates for promoting their company and selling their metals.
I can plaster their name all over my website, promote them by demonstrating the process and distributing them at my workshops or just advertise "Metal Art Prints" as the generic name that it is.
My consumer base has rarely if ever heard of metal prints let alone Chromaluxe metals.

Here is the question. Do any of you business owners that move decent quantities of mainstream products have a promotional discount relationship with a supplier?
No need to name them just fishing for general knowledge.
When you add new products to your business and website are you even considering these issues.

Their enthusiasm will depend upon the amount of traffic to your site and just how much time you are prepared to spend promoting their product I should think.

Absolutely ask them.

From the dept. of fwiw - I promoted a national frame maker at one of my bigger shows recently. I used them for several years. They sent me a lot of promotional info to hand out and also gave me some price breaks. Unfortunately, their quality slipped over time.

I mentioned the offer that the national seller made to a local frame maker, and they met the prices the national frame maker offered, and the local frame maker provided faster service and higher quality wood frames. It was a win-win and over time I ended up switching the local frame maker because of the value.
