If you'd lived in Britain at the time, you couldn't NOT know it: it was everywhere. Toilet paper sales fell off a cliff, I'm told; some folks were indeed dedicated followers of fashion.
The closest I got to being 'personal' with it was during a shoot in Belfast. We'd been allowed into the oldest pub in the city (well, so the company PR claimed) to shoot a calendar picture for a Scottish beer company (a chain that owned bars everywhere God put bars) and we could only go after closing time. I'm not sure how the security factors were worked out, but it was a bit unnerving to know that we would be letting off flashes in a supposedly closed and empty bar that, if I remember correctly, was pretty much opposite the Europa Hotel, a prime, explosively popular target in those days. To make matters worse, the model had taken off her engagement ring for the shoot and left it in the loo; after we left she realised she'd forgotten to pick it up, so we had to go back and hope someone was still there to let us in. She got it back; I wished I'd never seen her.
I hope this answers your concerns about my proximity/familiarity with the structure!

Great shot, Chris. I've done this probably a dozen times at various piers around Florida, but none of mine come close to this one. This is NOT one of those times when you'll get more emotional impact from B&W. The rust-colored concrete says it all.

Good shot. Some interesting cropping possibilities there, especially towards the top of the photo, if you want to get a bit abstract.

I love this kind of a shot. While I certainly see the b/w possibility, I do like the color mood.

Next iteration would be to have a living object in it, like a duck, a jumping fish or Gollum divinig for fish.

I believe there's a move afoot to ban apple barrels from Her Majesty's ships.
Custard apples were banned years ago - they introduced jenny-wrens instead; you know, the alternative variety of birds?

I think the image is just fine as it is, for me the yellow buff colours are what jump at me and warm glow it has.

I had this printed on metallic plate at 18x24 and it is simply stunning. I'll hang it next week and shoot a shot so you can see how it looks on my studio wall.

Really impressive, it's so easy for these types of images to only elicit a "so what?" response, and this one definitely does not. I think the restricted color palatte adds to the image and that in black and white it would be closer to "so what?"
