Finally got my hands on the 85/1.2 and thought people would be interested, as this lens has a pretty decent image circle.
Wide open, focusing distance about 1m.

Cropping out the vignette leaves you with just under 70MP.

Yes image circle looks decent, though of course you are pretty close there, so its expanded a good bit.
How would you rate the 85 1.2 sharpness on an MF sensor? (hopefully its a '2' version?)

F/1.2 on MF oh my! ;D this is actually a lens combination I was interested in seeing as I have the 85L and have always wondered what it would be like on MF, I've only heard that you can mount one via Hartblei H cam or Alpa FPS, but haven't seen any examples.
The "II" version shouldn't be any sharper than the original, only difference is focus motor and better coatings on the elements, which may lead to somewhat better contrast.

Only done the one close-up shot so far, so can't really comment on corner to corner sharpness.

You should check with Stefan to see if he's modified the HCam to work with this lens, because when I had an HCam, it wouldn't work.
It's unique in the Canon lens line-up in that it requires power to the lens in order to focus (it has some kind of weird fly-by-wire manual focusing). Works fine on the FPS.

I have recently tried and tested the new Zeiss CP Superspeed 1,5/85mm and the bokeh is on par with the Canon, maybe better even as the aperture is a bit smaller, but the Image circle is larger !
Very nice lens and fully manual, a dream to use. The price is 3300 € that´s hefty, but for any combined Photo and film work I would preferre this to the Canon.

Just FYI.
I tried the Contax CY 135f2 Planar lens on the FPS with IQ180 back and the lens covers the full image circle of the back with good corner sharpness.
Would be interesting to see, if the new very excellent Zeiss ZE 135f2 Apo-Sonnar also has such a large image circle (the Zeiss ZE 100f2 Macro-Planar does not).

The Micro Nikkor 85mm f2.8 PC-E also covers the full IQ180 sensor on the FPS, sharp out to the corners (unlike the 24mm). The linkage of aperture and shutter speed via the FPS works well also, once the correct exposure has been worked out.

The Image circle of the 1,5/85 Superspeed is probably identical to the Zeiss Planar 1,4/85mm and that nearly covers an IQ180 (with a bit of vignetting at infinity, getting better for closeups )

PS.: I also tested the Zeiss 2,0/135mm Apo T* but only on a 35mm body, time was too short to do work on the Hcam with it.
My full test of Portrait lenses will appear tomorrow in german magazine DIGIT! issue 5.

Really love the look of the 85 1.2 and the IQ!
Any word on what the next new FPS lens mounts might be? I have received an affirmative response from Alpa that an Adapter for the Leica S lenses is in development but haven't heard much about any others.

Mine is the 50 year anniversary, but its the same glass so yes, pretty much. Its quite a lens!

The 60mm Zeiss does not hold a candle to the 50mm Roddy, to my eyes at least. Quite soft compared to modern lens.

Yes very true, i got the 60mm CF and the 50mm Cfi mounted infront of a P45+. The 60mm see no land against a modern lens. But on film it is quite nice.

It's obviously softer than the Rodie, but its performance is pretty consistent right into the corners.
You need to take into account that it's available for about 1/10th of the price of the Rodie...

The Canon 40mm is also interesting. Yes, it does fall apart somewhat (to put it mildly) towards the edges, but what on earth are Canon doing building a 40mm lens for $200 with an image circle like that!

Here is a sample from today with the 40mm Canon (I paid 168 Euros, sales tax included). Pretty impressive on a (small) MF-back (Aptus II8) except for the far, far corners. After a 2:3 crop, the complete image is tack sharp!

hi mark, these are really nice. what camera did you shoot these with? i have been planning to modify a contax 645 body to fit a fd 85mm f1.2 like a guy who has done this with his mamiya 645 (can't find the link at the moment).
i planned on getting the mirror cut down to make the extra clearance. i did an experiment and you can cover half the mirror almost and still get a reasonable viewfinder image. i figure focusing being the biggest issue with this. i struggle to focus my hassy 110 f2…
if i could figure out how to put a electronic mount to run my ef 85 f1.2 and my 50 f 1.0 so you can turn the focus ring i would (these need power to actually turn the ring). not sure how to do this.

Focusing is indeed very tricky, at longer distances and in poor lights its nearly guess and check, much easier closer up though. The magnifier helps.
