I like it at all but I wonder if it benefits from a tad more local contrast.

I like it just the way it is.

If there were someone behind the glass it would be (nearly) perfectly atgetian.

Except for the toning.

Something like this, you mean?

Splendid, Jeremy. Did you shoot it with a view camera that requires you to take off the lens cap and count in order to get the correct exposure?

Sadly, I don't have one. If I did, though, I'd use my iPhone to time the exposure  ;)

The door surround, timber header, and the stonework are definitely interesting as a tableau...but the new iron railing "front and center" is definitely a deal breaker.  I can't ignore that it is there...because...it is there. For me the picture is a no-go from the outset...because of that.

That would be easily fixable (if Jeremy wanted to) via Photoshop's content-aware tools.

And only 20 months later, prompted by the fact that the lady in the wedding dress is visiting this weekend, I've done it! I don't think "easily" quite covers it, but I like to think I'm getting a little better at doing stuff like this, and practice doesn't hurt.

First thing I saw today was the top image, and thought "nice!".
It's still my favorite. Sorry, Jeremy!

The new version is just fine.

I really like the first one just fine. It's nicely processed and it causes me to do a double take. The planar variations--from repetitive brick wall, to intricate door, to the the simple "X" frame show interplay between surfaces. And not having a person peering through the door leaves a lot more to the imagination. In my opinion, your first version nails it.
