Since I am quite new to luminosity blending, etc., I need some critiquing as to where you think I was successful and where you think I need to take it further (or back as it may be).

Hi Chris,
I don’t know what you’re doing – but as far as the two images go, I think that were the shot mine, I’d try to keep the misty feeling which you have lost (in my eyes) by going too far into lifting contrast in sea, sand and sky. Tone it all back a little and it will perhaps be more pleasing.
Overall, it just looks too cold and too brittle.

To me the water looks pretty good, but the sand looks overly contrasty. I might back off on the water a little and on the sand a lot.
That said, depending on how you are printing and on what paper, the contrasty file might print very well even while it looks overprocessed on the screen.

Did a second edit which I think is much better. I just had to back off on some sliders and do some adding and subtracting in my masks to hit the correct tones with the right light.

I like that more, Chris, but it still feels too cold to me - maybe warm it a bit?
I have no way of knowing if it was shot in summer or winter, but for me, that doesn't really matter - I just find the coldness detracts from the shot as art and not as reportage of some specific day/period in time...
