The second one works just fine for me.
In the first one I'm bothered by the lack of detail in the big, white, center spot.

Thanks to all of you for your comments. I had another look at #1 and was able to recover a bit of structure in the white blob. I think it is a definite improvement. Thanks to Eric and Scott for the suggestion.

Now I like it, Chuck! I didn't expect there would be anything of sufficient interest to fix it, but the fine, swirling detail in the "white hole" really makes the image come alive for me now. Good work!

A huge improvement from my point of view. I like it a lot now, well done.

Nice! Now the spot seems to fit better with the rest of the image, releasing the eye to wander around and appreciate all the other patterns leading to the swirl.
