He has quite a character, but I have no idea what type of bird he is.

Looks like a black crowned night heron. Where was it taken?

Berkeley Aquatic Park yesterday afternoon. There was a mottled looking heron just a few feet away on another branch (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?topic=79883.0).

I had to sneak around to get shots of both before they took off. Without wading in a ways and levitating a few feet upwards, I couldn't get the sun angled right for this one, but was lucky that a few rays peeked in from the side as he stared at me a bit pointedly.

The one on this page is a Black-crowned Night Heron.

The bird on your other post appears to be an American Bittern.

Thanks Rich and K. I found one more frame that looked good of this one, and will probably post it later today. I don't know that much about birds yet, but feel lucky that I get such a variety showing up to have their pictures taken around here.

I love the B.C. Night Heron...and your shot is just fantastic...the natural light and shadow...and especially the light in the iris of the eye.  The pale olive green band in bg is great too.  It's such a nice relief from so many "flashed/strobed" images of birds/insects etc...that end up looking like they will be part of a tableau in a window display in a store or museum.

I'd call the second bird a juvenile Green Heron.

Doug,

I bow to your expertise, you have seen many more than I.

The first one is definitely a Black-crowned Night Heron.  The second image isn't that great for ID, but with the black 'cap' and the lack of mottling on the back, I'd agree that it's probably a Green Heron.  They can be hard to tell apart from the American Bittern though.
