This year I attempted to thru-hike the Pacific Crest Trail. Unfortunately, 700 miles in I had to quit because of a stress fracture...
I took the DP2M for this trip, as the landscapes in the desert are foveonic, and overall I'm not disappointed. I have had a few problems in some shots though, I'm not sure if it's because of motion blur (even at 1/125 s, all my pics are handheld shots, and sometime it was very windy) or maybe I was too much in a hurry sometimes and pressed the button too soon before the focus was locked. Also, I may have been too stubborn with 100 ISO shooting - actually up to 800 ISO the DP2M performs well IMO, and it's better to have a little bit of noise instead of motion blur, at least it is manageable... Anyways, it is definitely a camera that has a certain learning curve and I'm still learning how to use it properly. The Merrills are actually a good school to learn proper photography: in a way they are unforgiving but that forces you to take better pictures at first place by being more methodological and patient. I have to be more patient.
Still, I have taken the DP2M on a 6-week backpacking trip in Southern California, I'm not an experienced photographer, so this camera might not be as silly as some would say. What I mean it that the DP2M is actually an easy camera to operate, because it is simple, and although it has some flaws (I think of battery life and speed), it is perfectly possible to use it in any conditions. It only requires some effort to get familiar with this "alien" camera. I'm not a "chain gun" shooter, I used to take only about 30 pictures per day. So it was possible for me to last a whole week with 3-4 batteries and recharge them in town stops. And for longer stretches, I used the battery pack/SAC-5 with and USB cable system - which worked great, although the cable was sometimes annoying.
Here are a few samples (any comments are welcome, help me improve!)

As a travel and landscape photographer I always try to take the best equipment I have to get the top quality images. But unfortunately they are also the heaviest on my back. With the new technology of the digital photography I managed to reduce the weight wile still keep the comparable image quality from 4x5 view camera to medium format digital back and finally to Canon 5D Mark III. I never thought I will shoot anything lighter than that until I found the incredible Sigma DPM series. I first bought the DP2M, then DP1M, and just acquired DP3M to complete the system. The more I shoot with these little wonders the more I get hooked with the resolution and unique Foveon look on the images.
Last month I got a chance to really challenge the trio on a Photo Workshop in China. As a leader of the group I know I can't concentrate 100% on shooting myself, so for the first time in my professional career I left my pro gear at home and only took the three Sigma DPMs. My main goal on this trip was to shoot candid shots of the workshop participants. I already know the superior quality of these little gems but I was still a little bit worried their capability to replace my trusty DSLR completely on this 14 days international photo tour. Well, now I am back and processed some of the images I shot there and I can say the trio made it very well! The images produced by them are gorgeous! I share a few with you guys here and let me know what you think.
Now I am so glad I will hike much longer trails and climb much higher mountains with these feather light cameras!
Thanks,
John

I like every photo posted on this page, and can imagine each of them being a favorite of someone, but the last two by neways are special beyond what I’ve come to expect by looking at the DP M images.
I understand exactly what you mean by the wonder of carrying a small lightweight camera this capable. Many of us can remember carrying 4 x 5s (or larger), loading film folders in hotel bathrooms at night, or medium format cameras with heavy lenses like the Rollei 6008. I love the quality of the D800E, but after noticing Reed Reports referring to the images as being engraved with a razor blade, and seeing myriad posts by Hulyss and others, I rented the DP2M and DP3M. I used the DP3M twice as much as the DP2M, but ordered the 2M because I wanted to use it for one event along with the D800E and a long lens. It looks like small, high image quality cameras are the wave of the (near) future. Probably a good thing for us older guys!
-
truly amazing stuff
just wondering if I should wait for Sigma Foveon 2.0
-
Excellent stuff, neways.
There is definitely something special with these cameras, something unique that no other digital camera has. It's like another dimension, things are more life-like. IMO this technology is the first to compete with film.

@Juan: Nice pix and thanks for posting! This thread, unlike the old one, seems quite dead.
-
As a new owner I'm in the snapping away like crazy phase just to see what I get. There are great images in this thread, but it sure is kinda dead. Here's a few while going to the local DAV at the American Legion. Having had a stroke some years ago, I can't hand-hold a camera worth a darn. I didn't have a tripod with me. On the locomotive images, I had to rest the camera on top of the surrounding fence and while balancing myself.
-
The DP2M has me out of the Lurkers closet. A few more... I notice that Firefox is pretty much accurate in displaying the images. I'm hoping to post more often. In that regard, any comments would be appreciated. And its been really sunny and hot the past 5-6 days in the Chicagoland area. If the images look bright, it reflects the lighting at the time.
BTW, the alley photo is the rear of the local American Legion in Hammond. You enter the DAV from that side.
-
2 more with 100% crops.
-
Some 100% crops from the locomotives.
-
Amazing, isn't it? I keep being amazed and continually surprised at the ability of these little bricks to capture and render such amazing detail! Nice work.

Juan,
Great shots. In the last shot is that the road that goes over the Sierra Nevada from Granada to Capileira? If it is, is the road driveable in a normal car?
-
I wish I had the DP2M with me while stationed in Thailand. I bought my first slr, the Canon FTb, while over there. I was really excited. I was in that phase of snapping away like crazy like I'm now. Most guys shot b&w as the film and photos would be back in a week. Color was sent stateside and take months, often after when you finished your tour. This camera and thread inspired me to come out of the shadows and share. Any and all comments are welcome. I'm in western NY visiting my sister, and I'll go wild there. I'll have to install SPP on her computer ;)
-

Hi Pete, is a different road. It's the road from Granada to Sierra Nevada ski resort. This road continues to Mount Veleta and is only passable by walking.
Thanks.

Hi all, I have a question about using SPP. When I press the button "Full Res" sometimes get in the window "Fit in" 27.2% and sometimes 40.8%. Someone knows why this happens?
Thanks
-
It depends if the image displayed is in portrait or landscape mode. 40.8% is 3/2 times 27.2%; the image file height/width proportion.
-

Bingo !

Thanks Andrija but I think that's not the reason. I almost always shot in landscape orientation...
Thanks
-
I'm including 2 screen captures: the image in SPP is in landscape mode, then rotated to display it in portrait mode. The "full res" is clicked on, and the "fit in" percentages are 23.3% and 15.6%. I'm using my sister's HP computer with an uncalibrated monitor res of 1600x900, and image size in the DP2M is on HI. Medium and low size levels would show different percentages. Sorry if the image looks crumby; it looks way-blue on her system. I hope this helps.
-
Thanks Andrija, I believed I had seen 27,2% in a landscape picture :-)

Wonderful images, Juan. I enjoy and learn from seeing other images from around the world.
At the other end of the spectrum back home, the DP2M is great at illustrating items for sale. For example, I'm thinking about putting these 2 audiophile LPs on ebay. A lot of clarity and really brings out the fine print. My two passions are music and photography. Too bad I can only support one at a time.
-
Nice stuff, but no eye level finder is a real killer for some of us. Just can't deal with holding a camera out away from me for much of my work.
If Sigma comes up with an eye level finder, Leica/Xpro style I'll be looking more seriously at one of these.

Here's some shots I took just off the cuff. Nothing creative, but the quality of the bokeh, the grain, the colors, the detail!!
It's so filmy!
Straight out of the camera (RAW > JPEG) without any tweaks (I think SPP applied highlight recovery to the first shot on its own). I didn't bother correcting the photos because I wanted to share the SOOC experience.

That quality is addictive, isn’t it? I sent some RAW files and Tifs to several photographers, people in their later 60s who have earned their livelihood from photography - one uses the Phase One medium format cameras. Their reactions were expressions of astonishment. One of them (who uses the Phase one camera, stitching, and an Epson 9900 printer) has been experimenting with upscaling the files, and tried PhotoZoom Pro 5. He just wrote and said it is the most amazing thing for upscaling he has ever seen by a mile (speaking about a 200% upscaled file). I know none of these guys would ever have looked at a boxy little Sigma point and shoot. I can’t put it down!
-
Hi all. Can anyone post a Raw file of this camera. I wish to try one or two.
Thanks guys.

Try this chap's site; he has jpg and raw available to download.

Click the thumbnail, and there should be a link to DL the raw.
BTW, I've used my Canon only once since I got the DP2M. I get out the canned air, every now then, and blow off the dust ;)
I have a project where I've been photographing church frescoes. The Canon with Photo Ninja seem to work well together. I want to put the DP2M to work as well.
Here is a down-scaled file and 100% crop of what I'm getting right now. Sorry for posting non-DP2M images :o

He just wrote and said it is the most amazing thing for upscaling he has ever seen by a mile (speaking about a 200% upscaled file). I know none of these guys would ever have looked at a boxy little Sigma point and shoot. I can’t put it down!
Absolutely! Where has this little camera been all my life?
Hi all. Can anyone post a Raw file of this camera. I wish to try one or two.
Thanks guys.

Lots of images, RAW.

I can sent the RAW file to this one, if that will help. It is about 52MB I think.

You can get a better sense of them from a larger size - I don’t know how to post them here.

Note that the 'YOYO' part isn't tack sharp because it was vibrating, but check out the rest of the frame! So much detail in every part.
Here's one more from today. Cropped to about 40-50%

Don't worry about the composition in these, just enjoy the image quality.

I was lucky to find a Hoya Zoom Close Up Lens in mint condition. Now I have the chance to have some macro shots with my Sigma Dp2m. The pictures posted here are just test files. Jpeg straight from the camera, no retouch at all, very compressed. I´ll be doing some Raw shots test during the weekend. Stay tunned!
-
Still learning how to use the Hoya Zoom Close Up lens for doing some macro shots with my Sigma DP2m. Those are 4 shots handheld, raw with little post processing in SPP. They look really clean and sharp at 100% crop.
-
Most skies with this cam blow out easily. Also the colours look very strange to my eye as if there is a kind of vail in it. Also, many of the pics I see here look pixelated. And it is all in the skies with clouds. Once people shoot bw the sky joins the rest of the picture and things look spectacular again.
But my main question is just this: do any of you use a gradauted ND filter? And can some of you post shots of a sky which is half clouded and half not, may be cumulus clouds in it it or so?? Thanks!

If I ever get back to Spain I won't be forgetting my DP2M. Some fine shots here, and in your other posts - restrained and elegant - so that the IQ is just the cream on the cake.

out-of-camera jpeg, apart from resizing in paint, not touched...have a new computer, no lightroom installed yet.
admittedly poorly composed, just wanted to highlight dynamic range again.

Ryan, I like the B and W tanker photo and in general the non-HDRed industrial shots, 0414 cloudy day, and the 0476 sunset photo. 0519 was a great sunset, but the composition is a bit static. You must live in snow country.

A few add ons for better handheld shots. I was using the dp2m almost exclusively on a tripod and i wanted more versatility handheld. I wasn't real big on buying the sigma view finder, 150$ for a eye piece seemed a bit steep. I saw this VF-4 lcd view finder for 99$ and added the grip. It works great! I'll post some handheld shots soon, I've been able to go as low as 1/15th shutter speed and still managing sharp images which is great for me! Having the ability to steady it firmly against the face really helps.

It is my belief that this sensor does not like to be underexposed. Colors are much better when the exposure is as high as possible.

Juan Amores [and Palpman] [and anyone else shooting DP2M for black and white]:
I am blown away by the black-and-white images being produced with the DP2M. As I wait for Mister UPS to deliver my latest folly (DP2M), perhaps you could tell me:
I assume that you're shooting in RAW, and converting to B/W elsewhere [surely these can't be B/W jpegs from in-camera. . .]. Could you walk through your workflow to achieve your beautiful B/W images? How much done in Sigma PP, how much in Lightroom/Aperture, how much in Photoshop, etc. Any quirks to your conversions? Anything you have to emphasize?
Look at me; my first post and I'm asking magicians to give away their secrets. . . .
Thanks.

First post on this site, but long time lurker. I've bought and sold a couple dp2m's so far, and I'm thinking of buying another and a dp3m here soon. I love the files from these cameras. I have a d800e which is a great camera, but when you nail a shot with the sigma's it's just different, in a good way. I'm trying to find excuses to keep my nikon but for my style of shooting I'm finding it harder and harder to justify. I can buy both the dp3m and dp2m for the price of a good lens for my nikon.
-
FYI Clifton cameras are now selling these for £339 (£282+vat) I presume the prices will start to drop worldwide now. I just need to decide on the 2 or 3

I'm very tempted as sigma seem very quiet on a new version of these cameras

I just checked pout the Clifton deal. I think i'm going to pull the trigger, but I'm wondering about the shipping. It seems they have free 3 to 5 day shipping. Can that be right? Can shipping to the states really be so fast and cheap? Thanks

Hi, I shoot RAW, then convert the pics into TIFF and then use Silver Efex for fine tuning. My photo above has almost no post processing though (and was shot at 200 ISO by mistake, no noise adjustment needed though), and you can get excellent results with SPP only as well. I never have quirks during conversion.
There's no secret.. apart from the camera we use :P
PS: there are more pictures of my PCT trip to see on www.mkuhlmann.net - Enjoy!

I'm just now finding some time to go through some of my dp2m files from this summer. So here's one flying home from our fishing site in a de Havilland beaver. This was defiantly not the best camera for taking shots from an air plane but I got a few to come out sharp. I just bought a dp3m and I'm gonna pull the trigger on a d2pm for round number three.

Ok one more, then i'll stop spamming the thread.

Hey dad,
i own both and have used them extensively over the last year.
DP2M: 30mm lens is very versatile. I use it a lot for travel photography and landscape work. The lens is wide enough so that you can take images that work on their own.
DP3M: 50mm is the opposite of versatile. Obviously I know what a 50mm is, but it somehow felt more "zoomed in" then i expected. It's fabulous for stiching landscape photography. The geometry of the lens allows you to stich using a rectilinear projection which gives much cleaner results than the alternatives. The macro mode is also fantastic. However on a recent trip I only brought the DP3M and it felt limiting. Since the camera is also not optically stabilized in any way you need a monopod in almost all scenarios.
TL;DR: If in doubt get the 2.

You butchered this photo in post.
It has way too much color and it has been sharpened too much.

Hey dad,
I have a son?!? :o
I went for the dp3 in the end but now the price has tanked s/h 1's and 2's will we cheap. Which I guess will piss a few people off.

I actually should, and will :)
One thing though is that I think screen rendering is not doing Foveon justice. The are meant to be printed large.

Nice pictures.
With the announcement of the quattros I think Dp2m experiences will increase because:
- prices of dpxms going down
- quattro piquing the interests of people who were unaware of the foveon combine with the prices.

I'm seriously considering a DP2M thanks to what will hopefully be lower prices. Between it, an X100 (maybe an s), the Quattro, or a 6x7 film camera.

Hi Guys,
I am new to this site and new to the DP-2 Merrill. I bought one of the first DP-1 cameras many years ago and loved the sensor but didn't use it a great deal because of the small file sizes. I've only had the DP-2 M for a couple of days but I'm loving it so far, it could get more use than the D800 and the X-Pro 1 at this rate! :D
The problem with this camera is that every time I share a photo

Yes! if you have ever tasted fresh roasted coffee there is no going back. City+ roast it looks like? Right after the 2nd crack?
Tasty looking ;)

Thanks!
Yeah, although it was just around the second crack. I think that would classify as a Full City Roast, although I could be wrong. It was delicious. I don't think I can ever go back!

Great Shots!
Here's a shot from this summer of a small dolly garden. I'd like to hear some more about Quattro Dp's but I haven't seen anything. I'm really interested in a version with a little more dynamic range and a little bit better in low light.

No Foveon food photos before dinner................... dang, that made me hungry!

Shot from this fall. I think I just got lucky it actually came out sharp. So has anyone heard anything new about the Quattro's? I'd really like to drop my nikon system.

Nothing on the Quattro other than the crazy shape. I will be very interested to see some samples.....and yes. Why not an EVF???
TBird....

Following this thread with interest, the price drop in the Sigma's has me looking seriously at the DP2M.
I checked out Clifton Camera in the UK, their price is $130 below B&H currently.
Has anyone in the states purchased through Clifton? Any issue with warranty is something goes wrong?
Fast shipping?

The comments in this thread also apply to the Merrill 2:

I finally decided to get a DP2M after reading all the posts and looking at the pictures. The first thing I did was to fully charge the battery. I then spent about 30 minutes familiarising myself with the menus and operation since I did not have a memory card with me. I excitedly went home, loaded the memory card, formatted it and then...the battery died! I charged it again that evening and on the second day got only 62 shots before it ran out of juice - and that's without chimping. I will definitely need more batteries for out of town trips where I spend the whole day out of the hotel. The battery life is terrible but I'm loving' this camera.
Here are a few of my first photos.

This thread is making me hungry! ;D

Can't wait to get my teeth into a quattro.

Let's see if I can post. This is the Arnold Arboretum in Boston, MA. It's a stitch & crop. I fiddled with the knobs too.

Another one from today..
This couple rides a raft that they pull with a rope tied between their house and a makeshift bridge. They live on top of laguna lake and make a living harvesting kangkong (water spinach) which grows wild along the banks of the lake and by breeding ducks in a pen under their house. Come typhoon season, the water level reaches the floor of their home.

I used standard initially and use neutral tiff output. After reading this series, I use neutral in camera ...
Well, it seems if one use standard in camera, you can choose neutral in post. But if you choose neutral you only got original setting but no standard. Original just give you back neutral.
Should I use back the standard in camera instead ... Do we lose anything if we choose that in camera. What is the difference between only choose neutral in post but not in camera.
Minor issue, but having one more option seems better, if one just in a hurry :-). This is particular so for red. Neutral red is not red but standard red is a bit red. If no standard, the vivid is really wild.

Here's a no non-sense (and by that I mean plain old) waterfall pic to kick this fall season off.
