Title: Lightroom 5: Any differences in custom camera color "profile" rendering?
Post by: Ellis Vener on April 29, 2013, 11:44:40 am
I have not done a direct apples to apples comparison so this is more in the nature of a background knowledge  question.

If one has previously created custom Adobe DNG  profiles, using either X-rite's ColorChecker Passport or Adobe's DNG Profile Editor software, or used Datacolor's Spyder ColorCheckr target and software to create an H/S/L preset (please try to refrain for right now  from introducing  sidebar discussions about one approach versus the others),  will the changes in Lightroom 5's new processing algorithms either require reprocessing the target shots or will yield better results?

What changes? PV2012 should be the same as well as legacy processing.

If I knew what changes were being made "under the hood" I wouldn't be asking would I? I understand that Process 2012 (I can read my tab) is still current but does that necessarily mean that changes to other algorithms throughout Lightroom 5 won't have an effect on color rendering and color relationships?

I don't believe there are any changes in terms of the color engine processing but I could be wrong. When this happens, you're usually told so by the PV version.

There are no processing changes in LR5 that would require new DNG profiles...the only new DNG profiles needed would be for new cameras that were not supported in LR4. Bottom line? Don't worry about it. :~)

Thank you Jeff, I find that to be a more definitive answer. Do you know about H/S/L settings?

Pretty easy to check any such changes yourself. Render two images in the two versions the same way, subtract in Photoshop*. Better yet, make a color list in ColorThink and you've got dE values and vectors**.

None of the image adjustments have been altered in PV 2012. If ANY of the processing adjustments had been changed, there would be a PV 2013.

The only fundamental change between LR4 and LR5 is the addition of a new tool, Radial but with the exact same adjustments and the Spot Healing which introduced non-circular healing. LR4 spot healing will render correctly in LR5, but LR5 non-circular healing can not be rendered in LR4 (or ACR 7.x). And the Upright corrections which are also not backwards compatible...

Once again, Jeff, Thank you.
