Title: LR4 - how to print a 100% crop of larger image ...
Post by: chaddro on April 23, 2013, 07:29:52 pm
Hi All!

Let's say I have an image that would normally print at 12x18, but I want to print that at 24x36. So I'm enlarging the image, doing some sharpening, probably some noise reduction, etc.

Time to print... but I'd like to take the image as processed at 24x36, and make an 8x10 crop of an important area so I can check sharpness, etc. but I can't seem to find how to do this.

It's a no brainer in photoshop, but is it possible in LR4?

Thanks!

You need to crop out a section that is equal in pixel dimensions to the product of the dpi you want to print x the width/length of the image.  In the example you listed, assuming you want to print at 300dpi, you need to crop a section of the image that is 2400 pixels wide and 3000 pixels high.

***and then make sure you set up Lr not to upsize or downsize the image.

Correct...and this is a situation where a Virtual Copy would be useful so you don't screw up the crop settings of the master image.

I suppose the simplest method would be to set the print resolution to be equal to the dpi you used for the calculation.. but..

be careful that your image isn't larger than your printable area, although I think Lr would just crop it some in that case, you would still have a "100% crop print".

Make a virtual copy and crop that.

Forgive my ignorance, Jeff, but how do you crop to particular pixel dimensions in LR (as opposed to a particular ratio)?
