Title: Where to buy short cable releases
Post by: torger on March 26, 2013, 04:22:30 am
Without success I've been trying to find a supplier of those short (~15 cm) small light cable releases that are suitable to have permanently mounted to the copal shutter to speed up setup time (I only use the long cable release when I need to do long exposure or stand in an uncomfortable position).

Anyone that knows about a web shop that sells them, preferably in EU?

Try a local camera shop's "bargain bin", they might even have some used ones floating around with the used camera stuff. Just ask :)

I have NEVER purchased a cable release new, all of mine(about 40 or so, I'm fickle ;)) have been sourced from the local camera shows to me(I'm in LA), or from various friends/trades/buying,etc over the past few years. Ranging from 3" ones from old folding Kodak's to 60" ones from view camera kits I've parted out.

but if you must buy new, try Gepe or Kaiser releases. Top notch quality-wise, and should last you a long time w/ kind use.

Thanks for the tip. Large format / tech cam photography is not common around where I live so I don't have those camera shops. The shortest Gepe/Kaiser cable release I'm able to find is 6" (=15 cm), ie perfect.

did not manage to find one without the locking screw in the European webshops though unfortunately

Here is a German manufacturer:

Just ordered (and got) four of these extensions (13 euro each).

Do you know if they have 15cm cable releases? I only find 25cm as the shortest on their site, I prefer shorter when permanently attached to the lenses.

25cm is the shortest they offer in their web shop but I'd suggest to send them an email and ask if they can produce a shorter one.

I have the following permanently attached to the lenses and then use a pretty long cable release.

Not sure if makes a difference but at least I believe it's less likely to induce vibrations than a short one :-)

Don Libby uses a short extension attached to the shutter release.  it's known in some circles as the "Libby" extension/release.  http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/233735-REG/Gepe_603007_Cable_Release_Extension_f.html

You can then attach whatever length cable release you want to the extension.  Gepe also makes a 6" release cable.

I've just got reply from Gepe, they only offer their cable release products on the american market, so if you want 6" as European it seems to be Kaiser with that unnecessary locking screw that's the answer.

Mailed gebr-schreck to see if they can make shorter cables, no reply yet.

B&H does ship overseas.

I've been using these cables for years as it makes it a heck of a lot faster and easier esp when you're wearing gloves.

Here:

They make them to your specifications, if you need them really short. Very good quality.

Speak to Paula at Linhof Studio they've got all sorts of shutter accessories: http://www.linhofstudio.com/products/accessories/shutter_accessories.php (http://www.linhofstudio.com/products/accessories/shutter_accessories.php)

Yup, Linhof and Studio is the place to go - the 5cm / 50mm ones are perfect, long enough to be useful but not too long to get in the way when you leave them attached to the lens.

Even though they're not listed on the L&S page, Paula sells them - the Linhof part number is #100802.

Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately I've already ordered 10 x Kaiser 15 cm cable releases, but when I've lost those I'll ask Paula :). I think "permanently attached" (rather "default attached", change to longer when desired) short cable releases to each lens is such a good idea that more should have them on their product pages. It speeds up mounting time.

Extend tripod, attach camera, attach sliding back on (with digital back + sync cable already attached), attach lens (if change is required), attach sync cable, ready to shoot! Not needing to screw on that cable release makes a difference :)
