I did not know which button I pushed so I began again this new topic.
So,in the middle of the autumn,
-
I made a journey to Bulgaria again.
-
I arrived at Varna,a Black See side town.
-
I made a journey to Bulgaria again.
Looks like a swiss highway… narrow!
-
Looks like a swiss highway… narrow!
Yes but...shorter.
Thanks
-
Varna has 300,000 inhabitants and two of the virtues of the new era are raised into the haven ::)
-
From Varna we went on the right,on a road to south.
-
Here, passing over the hills we met first snow.Later the people told us that it was a very bad weather with storm which broken the trees down on the road
-
The snow was with us many miles.
-
Suddenly,the sea,the Black Sea,appeared
-
Then the entire peninsula of the old town of Nessebar revealed us.
-
On the passageway toward the old town a windmill meets us.
-
This, rather simple construction, from 17th century, was turned into a symbol used by architects at the buildings of the new town.
-
Generally speaking a windmill asks open spaces. Here the architects put this like windmill ornament in a closed corner of the building. The answer could be"to open that closed space". For my taste the result was a failure.
-
On the other side of the isthmus there is an interesting statue.
-
Whom does the statue represent? Being from 2006 the easiest way to find the answer seemed to be asking the author,Stavri Kalinov. He said this is a new Noah, with a dove in his left hand, looking for a new land. But other people think this is Saint Nicholas, the protector of the sailors, because he has a cross in his right hand and all know that Noah was before Jesus and the cross,as a symbol, was unknown for him.
-
This peninsula is around 900 feet long and 400 feet wide.It has two main roads with many narrow streets between them.Waiting for the future tourists, the boats will spent the winter on the ground.
-
The ruins of the walls of the ancient town of Messembria -now Nessebar- are still standing and the tourists could see them just the entrance.
-
For a short time I'm returning to the Noah statue because I saw,in a corner of a large central boulevard of Bucharest-Romania,in a small and cramped green space a kind of Noah and His boat.Having at its stern a cinema,at its starboard a bookshop and at its bow another building, this Kind of Noah looks for the land in the flats of his successors.
-
Although this Noah seems to be,for me,a bad joke,in a city with very few statues,I post processed it in the same way as Noah from Nessebar to emphasize its value,I hope.
-
Returning to the walls, they were built and rebuilt for many times
-
but only in nowadays they were rebuilt for touristic purposes.
-
After a short rain we went out for a walk on the streets, now, without tourists,in this so called dead season.
-
The scientists say that a third of the peninsula was swallowed by the sea.
-
This town, whose age is almost 7,000 years, was firstly of the Thracians, then was conquered by Greeks is now a seaside resort conquered be Germans. Here you could see a "German town" or maybe a holiday "Bayerischer Hof",only.

Well with Perla, Bayerischer Hof and Honolulu, you have the choice between different hotel & restaurant styles!

As usually you have right but I looked for something Bulgarian, being in Bulgaria.Opposing me Germans look for Germany everywhere.....or maybe not.......

I would also look for something Bulgarian in Bulgaria but some folks like to feel at home everywhere on the planet. It's kinda weird: why travel to remote places if the only place and atmosphere you like is the one you have at home?

Again, you,as usually, have right. The "tragedy" is that in this part of the world some Bulgarians do not want to be in Bulgaria,as you will see.Commercial interests do that,....perhaps.........
-
In time, the need to wash increased so at the beginning of 6th c.these bath was built. There were the ages of Justinian the Great the Byzantium's Emperor. Then, there were wars, and wars again and again and the need of the cleanness decreased ......in the same time with the increasing of the need of the fight. Those who survived built over in 9th c.a cereal depot and the lime-kilns.
-
The legend says there were 40 churches on this peninsula. This is one from 14th c.whose name is St.John Aliturgetos ( Undedicated )
-
It says that the reason to remain "Aliturgetos" was a builder who fell down and died inside the church. That killing did it inadmissible for future worship.
-
Other say that the reason should have been the crusaders under Amadeus of Savoy's command who burned out the roof of the church. Then the earthquakes finished what the crusaders begun.
-
Messembria as many other places of the Europe was a "sandwich" of populations.Over Thracians were Greeks, then Romans-that was BC.Then Greeks again(Byzantine Empire),then Slaves from 5th c. AD. Bulgarians came over Slaves and ruled them. From 7th c.they organized first Bulgarian state recognized by Byzantium.Below you could see The Old Bishopic Church from 5/6th c.
-
Walking without a precise goal we found some things with a strange perfume
-
These wooden houses were built at the end of 18th c.and the beginning of 19th c. and are distinctive for the Nessebar. They will not probably impress you. This place was one which confronted with many natural and not only natural calamities so the aspect of a cheap and provisional state is visible.
-
That is more visible for those who saw the West European wooden masterpieces like this from Alsace,France. That could define the diversity of the history and of the people pressed by their history. Those few English words are their hope?......... Who could know !
-
The basilica Virgin Merciful is from 6th c..Around 14th c.was transformed in monastery. Then,it disappeared and was discovered in..... 1920.
-
Walking on the narrow streets where beauty poorness and oldness live together, someone could ask what it happened here,in the past, when the people renounced at the brick and stone for the wood. The answer could be those strange names of the streets such Khan Krum, Khan Asparukh,Tsar Ivan Alexander,Basil Bulgaroktonos and so on which come from the history or natural disasters or a deadly combination of both.
-
There, where the sun,the beach and the sea are together the wine(and the women-of course :)) must be nearby. Now,the sun is out so the winery is closed.(In their language and with their alphabet is written "Vinarna"/BNHAPHA )
PS-to be Bulgarian "I",N must flip horizontal but I don't know how...... :-[
-
I'm a disorderly tourist I never notice what I see so in my head there is a mixture of noises, smells and images which I shell not illustrate ever.So I can't say if this is from St.Paraskeva church or not.I hope it is.
-
Those ,who lived here in the 10th c.,built ST.John the Baptist church,a beauty.

And not a sign in German, English or foreign language. From that side, this magnificent church seem preserved!

There is one on a side of the monument in several language. As you can see there is no cross on the tower that because from inside it can see the sky
-
From 14th c. came until us this monument of Pantocrator Christ with nice ornaments in the shape of swastica(real swastica not that of Nazis :)) and not only.
-
No,we did not move from Nessebar - Bulgaria to Florence-Italy,these are wooden constructions and we are still in Nessebar :)
-
Although the majority of these monuments have their inside closed for the tourists,
-
I succeeded in but the inside was disappointed as you could see below.
-
As it can easily see, from the outside, that the inside is empty. The prohibition of the inside access has a security reason for the visitors.
-
Of course not all the tourists are interested in such empty interiors rather to find the bargains of these places :)
-

Modern tourists are usually more interested in shopping than visiting historical places… The irony of this trend is that you can buy the same bag/shoes/etc… almost everywhere on the planet.
-
and made in China :) :) :)
-
However there is a monuments which was restored and transformed in a museum. It is opened to visit inside. But it is difficult to shot without paid a small tax,3 LEV,because of control cameras :o
-
The altar is on the east side of the church.Always on the North side of the altar screen St.Archangel Michael is painted. Here,He was worn like soldier and with His feet on a corrupt angel. On the South side is,always,St.Archangel Gabriel-The Messenger.
-
The beauty of the topside of the altar screen shows to the visitors the love of those people for their faith.
-
St.Stephan Church is the name of the monument but only this east wall, with three apses, came to us from 11th c.
-
It is interesting to observe that here,in Nessebar, the Ottomans built only a bath in 17th c.-now a ruin-and a fountain,in 18th c.,still in service. For me this shape represents Ottoman power which was decided to stay here for eternity and in the same time a kind of hidden lasciviousness.
-
Like everywhere on such "rivieras",the works of art commerce try to be up even in off-peak season.
-
Showing so much determination I was sure that all local beauties will pass easily over the dead season to come :)
-
I noticed the same determination to survive at all kind of Nessebar "beauties".
-
Every trip has an end.Next day we left this place with the wish of returning
-
The night brought a bad weather,so,the road over the hills was more a nightmare.
Thank You.
