Hey all! Here's a new one from Rodeo Beach, in the Marin Headlands. Rodeo Beach is one of the most stunning beaches available in California's Bay Area. It draws throngs of photographers who come for its dramatic sea-stacks and sheer cliffs. These were the things that captivated me most on previous visits, but this time, I was far more intrigued by the giant rocks that line the beach. I could not help but think that if the beach wasn't protected as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, sculptors and artists would have taken these rocks long ago, for the beautiful veins and intricate patterns. But just sitting on the shore, they are reserved for the world's oldest sculptor, slowly and methodically being fashioned into a living work of art, unequaled by any carved by human hands.

Yup. them is some nice rocks! And not a bad rendering of them either!! ;D

I like the focus on the foreground while placing it in a cool background. May I ask how long an exposure you used?

Wonderful photograph in every way: composition, timing, rendering. A great photograph for the wall and a great "how to" teaching photo. Thanks for sharing.

You could increase the contrast between the sky, the uppermost rock and the water to create more visual tension, or darken the left top corner to pull the eye to the rock.

Thanks for the comments, all! I tried those things djjohnr, and didn't like any of them. It makes the visible foreground look fake, as if it should have been totally in shadow. That being said, I do agree with you, and would have loved for some clouds to serve as anchors, alas, it was not in the cards.

It's a beautiful image Matt. It's just my eye gets pulled to that left corner. I made a quick edit to it and I think it pulls the eye in without being noticeable (darken top left corner to match the right corner, light contrast increase in the fog from the left hand side of the image following the water mist up through the rock + light contrast increase in the sky to make the mist boost look natural). I think with a little more work you could take this over the top.

The top left hand corner is where the illumination for the scene is coming from. Making the top left and right to look the same will leave the viewer wondering where the light source is? Personally I think the balance of the image is just right.

I agree with Stamper. If the corners were more even, the image would be much less believable.
It's just fine the way it is.

I enjoy how the light in the foreground rocks is balanced by the darker back. Nicely composed and processed. I do feel that the darker side of the rocks in the foreground is a bit unnaturally bright for my taste. Just my opinion though. Great overall.
