Title: Ilford Galerie Gold Fiber Silk - Mfg Profile vs Custom Profile?
Post by: rasterdogs on December 01, 2012, 02:13:11 pm
I'm considering purchasing a custom profile for this paper from 'Cathy's Profiles'.

Can anyone comment on the quality of Ilford's profiles for this paper?

Also interested in comments on custom profiling services and the quality of the profiles.

 ???

Thanks,
rasterdogs

It may depend on the printer. On an Epson 3800 and now on a Canon 6300 I found the canned profiles quite good enough to work with.
On the Canon printer I now use the Canson Baryta Photographique profile which has better skin tones and shadow detail when applied to GFS.

Unless something has changed, I would not use Cathy's Profiles....period!

A bunch of people have sent money and printouts over the past year, and received nothing in return, and no answers to e-mail.

When I first started using the Canson version of this paper for my 3800, I made a profile and tested it against theirs.  I guess it doesn't say much for my knowledge, or equipment/software, but theirs was a better profile than mine.

Epson R3000 profile is very good. My custom one is almost identical.

The Epson 3880 profile that Ilford supplied was quite poor and I never used it.

Eric Chan made profiles for GFS for my R3000 & 4880 printers.  Both are significantly better than Ilford's profiles (which were pretty decent).  I think it would be worthwhile to have custom profiles made.  Eric is no longer making profiles, but I think other highly qualified folk here do.  Perhaps they could chime in here and let us know!  I've benn wanting to have a couple more created for some new papers I've started using.

Many years ago I got a custom printer profile from 'Cathy's Profiles'.  Good profile and no problems.

I've had good results using the manufacturer profiles with my r2880.

Same experience with an Epson 3800.

I'm more than happy with the manufacturer profiles on my Epson 4900.

I get mine from the Digital Dog Andrew Rodney.  More expensive than other places  but Andrew has been making profiles for a long time and I trust what I get from him as being as accurate as possible.
